I don't agree with everything.
You can game on anything with a screen on it. You couldn't do that previous generations. Why buy a dedicated gaming device for the same experience? Gaming hasn't changed much in almost 20 years. I don't think consoles and handhelds will disappear, just decline.
Funny, I grew up without ever paying for any games. Piracy was the norm, I think the first game I ever payed for was at age 19. I've been making up for it though, and now spend over $1000 a year on gaming.
So if I can move on from free AAA games, that let's be honest used to be more exciting and fresh in the old days, to paying for Tombraider tombs left behind edition, I guess moving from Angry birds to The last of us is not that difficult to justify price wise.
Well Facebook games are no longer that popular, and if mobile games just keep releasing the same types of games then they will become less popular as well.

The same can be said for console games.

So they grew up with the principle that had to pay to enjoy games, they are the ones that are buying GTA V in masse, and are buying gaming consoles today. The new generation of kids won't learn that. Also, just because your 8 year old brother wasn't happy when he didn't got a PS4 doesn't mean all kids are. My 9 year old cousin is extremely happy with his Galaxy S3 mini and playing Angry Birds and Cut the Rope all day. The people that are buying PS4s and bought GTA V (the so called "hardcore" gamers) will eventually stop playing games, and the new generation will be the ones that will take over, the ones that will grow up playing mobile games. Edit: also, learn to read, I said $300+, meaning $300 is lowest you are currently paying (without counting deals obviously) for a gaming console, which is the Wii U. |
As a kid you dont pay for shit the parents do, be it a conolse or ipad the kid is not paying for anything. As you said parents do pay, pay for everything rent car fuel food games, then its a natural progression to adult that you pay for your own shit and gaming becomes a part of that. If you are a gamer you pay if you are a casual you enjoy tablet showelware.
Either way they are gaming, which opens them up to a possible future console buy. Your cousin is a casual, then there are gamers whom to that tablet games are just not enought. 400 and 500 consoles set records, learn to read that.
Its only natural the numbers of casuals will grow faster then the gamers but there will always be a dedicated gamer market and with the world pop increasing and more markets being able to afford such luxuries as gaming. The consol market is just fine.
2 out of the 3 new/next gen console came out setting record numbers = Doomed doomed i tells you lol.

Would you say that it is because gaming on the PC online has free multiplayer; or mostly because of the popularity of digital game services like steam?
Either way, I for one would have no problem with the resurgence of PC gaming and would gladly welcome it into the living room since it has so many options like mods, graphical settings, a form of backwards compatibility and if the steam box takes off, maybe that platform could be a viable way for less successful hardware and software manufactures to find a platform in the years to come in the declining console market.

Let's say you have a boy playing on his iPhone when a Battlefield 7 video comes on the television. He will want that. Explosions, tanks, machine guns--he's going to want that. Angry Birds Zeta isn't going to replicate that. There will be customers lost, no doubt. I think Nintendo, because their style of game is generally less complex, will see the biggest falloff, but even then their depth and quality will still brings in an audience. If home consoles go away, it will be because of technological developments, not a lack of interest. One day people might be able to hook their phones to a tv and a controller and stream games, for example. However, I just can't see the audience for experiences like Halo, CoD, or Uncharted just disappearing. |
There are already games being developed and sold on the App Store that are akin to CoD/Battlefield. They aren't as fleshed out, but they are getting there.
What console makers need to do is evolve with the market if this happens. Sony is doing a pretty good job at this (integrating social media, streeming, online stores.) Nintendo is starting to do this with their VC/eShop/Netflix/Hulu as well. It's not just physical games anymore.
I would also like to point out that Facebook is going downhill. None of my friends use Facebook (I'm a High Schooler), they've jumped ship to Twitter and Vine. Neither of these have games built in. I realise that's somewhat anecdotal, but it's true. Remember when everyone jumped ship from Myspace to Facebook? Well, it's happening again.

I think its a huge combination of things that just make PC gaming arguably superior to console gaming and consumers are finding out about it.
Much cheaper games, tons of mods, cutting edge graphics if you want them, Steams awesome way of tying it all together, tons of indie games like DayZ and Rust you cant get on consoles. PC is just the way to play now days IMO and I think consumers are catching on as well.
That being said PS4 and X1 are both great systems and neither are "doomed". But Im not sure either will see the success like PC is having.

Agreed, all good reasons for why PC market has found continual success over the years and thanks for your input.
