Sorry, but NPD is not an indication of how many people are jumping ship. It doesn't prove Playstation is taking a significant number of Xbox users.

Its a safe bet most people buying PS4's are or were PS3 owners. Its just simple logic.

The PS4 may steal many Xbox users down the road, but it hasn't quite happened yet.

The fact that the PS4 started out this good compared to the X1 just means that it will take quite a few xbox users in the future.

I agree with zero, the ps4 won't lght Japan on fire. The ps3 sold like 1.5 million a year there? Wow that's massive.....

I'm sorry if my "opinion" doesn't match up to yours! But if you look at the last gen, the wii sold pretty well and didn't set Japan on fire either. PS3 sold pretty slow too. I'm not saying the ps4 won't sell pretty well, but I think that Japan has shown they aren't as "into" consoles as other countries are. Now you acting like just because it's the ps4, it will suddenly change that. Now THATS even greater logic you have there..

edit: even Sony sees Japan as the #3 market, why else would they wait until February to release it in their homeland? Consoles just aren't that huge there anymore. It's just a reality.

Consoles were very popular last gen in Japan.

PS2+GC+XB=about 28 million

PS3+Wii+360=about 24 million

The huge decline in Japan is very exaggerated and there is still cleary a market for them.


It is probably not so cut and dry as that. Last gen was a very long gen and this gen probably will not be. PS2 was a monster so that gen was very good, and last gen was so long that the PS3 could get close to Wii numbers. Basically I expect a new console in at least 5 years compared with 6 and 7 years for last gen.

Why do you think this generation will not last as long as the last generation

I cannot see companies taking losses for 5 years if Sony dominates.

If MS doesn't get competitive with the pricing I definitely feel this trend will continue and PS4 will inevitiably start taking much of the Xbox 360 userbase. But right now, MOST people buying a PS4 are PS3 users.

For the record, I'm simply saying MS can do plenty to boost their sales and stop a large number of 360 users from jumping to Playstation.

I never thought Sony would sacrifice billions to compete with Xbox, but they did. Now lets wait to see what MS does when they're in a bad position.

When you see how PS4 is dominating Europe and rest of the world : It's already over. PS3 won there, and PS4 is much more liked than PS3. It's the total opposite for Xbox brand. So the gap will be larger.

The fight is in the US, and it seems than more people want a PS4 than a One there too (I just watch numbers).

You don't have to be on top to be profitable.

Xbox 360 was profitable and it was not the best selling console of the 7th genration. In spite of losing a fortune on defective hardware.

I'm pretty sure PSP was profitable and it got trounced by the DS.

Indeed but so far it does not look like Wii U will  be very profitable. Gamecube was not to profitable as the gameboy advance was where most profits came from and Wii U is currently doing worse on all fronts compared to the Gamecube.

Now Sony can go for the overkill if they bundle PS4+vita for the same price as the xbone. I know it will never happen', just wishful thinking
