You don't have to be on top to be profitable.

Xbox 360 was profitable and it was not the best selling console of the 7th genration. In spite of losing a fortune on defective hardware.

I'm pretty sure PSP was profitable and it got trounced by the DS.

Indeed but so far it does not look like Wii U will  be very profitable. Gamecube was not to profitable as the gameboy advance was where most profits came from and Wii U is currently doing worse on all fronts compared to the Gamecube.
