3DS should be in it's peak year now yet it's falling hard. Producing figures between 50-70k in the recent NPD. Is mobile gaming destroying the 3ds?

You cant say, it needs the correct software, because nintendo has thrown every major franchise at it.

In fact the 3DS has dropped around 50% from last year, and that includes pokemon and the 2DS

It's falling in Japan, where it has already sold over 15 million. As far as I'm aware, it's still selling well in the West -- better than the same period last year, right?

I'm not sure why the 3DS should be peaking now (the middle of February of all times), or why 50,000K a week for North America is bad anyway.

No, that would be less than half of last year (around 140-150k for January). That's with Pokemon X/Y this year and the new cheaper 2DS model along with other software releases like Animal Crossing and Luigi's Mansion 2.

Handheld market is in huge trouble. 

I think what's happening is every day more and more kids are getting introduced to/hooked on smartphone/tablet gaming ... it's eating the handheld business alive. Vita is completely dead in the West, 3DS is trying to fight the good fight, but it's being eaten up. 

Ofcourse it's selling well in the west.. well atleast it did, 50-70k is pretty low for a system that should be hitting it's peak.

Japan's numbers are still pretty good.

I actually meant it's peak year, not it's peak month. And it's not 50k a week in america, it's 50k in an entire month.

For comparisons sake the 3DS sold around 150k this time last year, with less software and no 2DS

That 50K on the front page chart is not for a whole month, but for one week. 50k in one week seems pretty good to me.
