handhelds imo will become an after thought, unless there is something signifcantly revolutionary from nintendo or sony..

because smart phones and tablets are undeniably destroying that market.. and are beginning to eat away at the console market..

ppl would buy kids a console for them to be entertained, now they buy them an ipad

Why do you say the PS4 at most to sell as well as PS2? The PS4 has shattered every single PS2 record so far. Why is it somehow impossible for PS4 to surpass it? Sony is doing everything they did right with the PS2 this time around and then some. With strong continued (which every PS console has had) support and a good amount of time, the PS4 will go far.

Console launches are definitely not everything. The 3DS and Wii U both had pretty great launches, then both went into a deep draught and started selling horribly in comparison to their predecessors. One came out, the other is still in the depression.

Am I saying this will happen to PS4? No, definitely not. However, the entire market is in decline. As well as MS putting up a much larger fight than they did in Generation 6.

Edit: Wii also sold extremely well and broke records. Did it sell more than the PS2?

Yeah probably, but it's still to early to say "no way".

Wii U - 20 m,  but it's still sort of expensive.  It's cheapest, but there is quite a bit of price to drop.  I'm thinking, 20 m, but I'm still waiting to see what kind of effect Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. U does on sales, and further price cuts.

XBO - 75m+, but it's hard to say.  It's still very highly priced.  500$, when the sweet price point is way below that.  There's not a lot of info for sales yet.  3 months of data to extract over to 5 years or so with many variables that may greatly change things.  Price cuts, games will probably do wonders.  It might do way better, or it might not even sell 50m.

PS4 - 100m+, once again hard to say.  400$ is still pretty expensive, same deal as Xbox One, though it seems more favorable particularly due to cost and recent PR.

So you are agreeing with me, though?

At the most Wii U could do 35 million, PS4 120 million, and Xbox One 90 million to me. But yeah, this gen will do less than last gen.

I don't think this gem has a chance, as I do not think it will last as long.

Now a good comparison would be day of release of gen 8 until gen 9 to the same time for gen7. Tho i still think Nintendo being down might be the problem.

In the case of the Wii -- both of its competitors also sold extremely well.

In the case of the PS2 -- both of its competitors sold badly.

I know I keep saying it and you're probably tired of hearing it, but the Wii was a special case and its sucess probably won't be replicated.

OP: 100% agreed, been saying this for a long time now.

In that case, the PS4 wouldn't be able to as well. Correct?

What you're saying is true, so I don't really care if you've said it twice now.

I concur with the OP. Too many huge global forces in play that will impact console market negatively.
