I felt 2012 was a bit meh, but 2013 was pretty good from their first party. TLOU was the only "holy shit" game, but everything else was still good.
God of War: Ascension Beyond Two Souls (technically second party) Gran Turismo 6 The Last of US Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus (shush, it's a first party IP :P) Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
Plus a load of great third party exclusives like Ni No Kuni. To be honesty they should probably have been concentrating more on PS4 development in 2013, but hey ho :P Sony never have been great at launch line ups. But yeah, 2009 - 2011 was glorious. |
As i said, it was ok. Most games they have released for the last two years has been recieved below expectations.
People want to act as if sony has some infinite library of first party games but just like Nintendo and MSFT they have staple franchises and then release games with diversity. We can act like Sly cooper, Ratchet, and Beyond is big but they appear to be no bigger than Kameo, Viva Pinata, and State of Decay (each sold over 1m).
Sony certainly has released some good games this generation but it is a bit of a stretch to say they have 30 "notable" franchises. None of the big 3 has 30 "notable" franchises.
If anybody can actually name 30 big franchises for any of the big 3 i would be highly shocked. Hell it would be hard to name 10 big time sellers.
The good news is we're in next gen now and MSFT and Sony has been gearing up with new franchises. Of course people can argue about list wars but they both have a lot of diversity and has been getting even wider as of late(Killer Instinct, Project Spark, Quantum Break, The Order: 1886, Tearaway, Gravity Rush to name a few). Nintendo hasnt really been widening their library but they certainly have a strength when it comes to mascots.
Id prefer to focus on now and see if the games coming out are going to be good and wait for all the new ip's sony and MSFT are teasing.
