All these long years as a gamer I have fallen many times to the trap the hype machines of various companies have created.Sometimes the reason is their previous work,other the talented people behind the upcoming game,a beloved franchice,or a remake-remaster I always wanted are valid baits too.I admit that I have voluntarily believed them and been dissapointed a lot of times.As time goes by I find myself to be more sceptical and wait before I become overexcited about something.Maybe it's that I've walked more steps into this earth and know how the world spins,or that videogames can't excite me so easily anymore.Having said that I'm always ready to be surprised,and rewrite my life as a gamer.What's your thoughts on this matter?What's your relationship with hype?Have you grown out of it?Are there any things out there that can still surprise you?

Last thing I let myself get hyped about was glassesless 3D on the 3DS. After that, I decided that -I- would be the one who decided if I was excited about a feature, not the company selling it.

Thanks for your reply.I was overhyped for the glassless 3D on the 3ds too.It did turn out to be good but not like the second coming like they advertised it.Two years later I barely use it anymore.

It absolutely comes down to the franchise/developer for me, and in some cases it determines my hardware decisions. Like, Gran Turismo makes me jump around like a giddy schoolgirl, always has, and probably always will. And because of that, I'll always (or at least for the foreseeable future) purchase Sony hardware. The lion share of my gaming is on PC though, and given the monetization of the industry, I've been pretty good at simply abandoning franchises I've loved for poor business practices that I feel do more harm than good to gaming.

When you are a Nintendo Fan, you learn to critically under hype things. That way you can be a happy Nintendo Fan.

I have an unhealthy hatred for all things "trend". It's so severe that I will intentionally NOT use/wear/say/watch/eat whatever it is, no matter how great it may be, just because I don't want to be a part of a flock. I find that trend whoring is an insult to the person, as that person is void of critical thinking and guts. In essence, cowardly.

The only thing I will engage in is video games because, well, if you support the trendy console, you are guaranteed more games, more people to play games with, longer life cycle, better multiplatforms and so on.

But as for everything else? Nope. I haven't watched one episode of Breaking Bad, and probably won't.

I still use it and like it but like you say, it was good but not the 'second coming.'

Stuff like Miyamoto saying 'You can feel the weight of the characters...' and making it sound like we'd be able to stream 3D motion pictures from major companies on the thing... ended up not being true.

Sometimes it's nearly impossible to not be affected by what is popular and lovable around you.It works silently in our subconsious and poisons our will step by step.It needs serious amounts of critical thought and maturity to overcome it.
