I think part of Nintendo's problem is that kids are aging faster.
My nephews played wii from age 3 to 6 then started playing on the xbox360 and never looked back and all their friends are on xbox/ps3 in the same time frame. So if any of these kids have an older sibling or gamer dad, they're getting sucked into xbox/ps much faster or immediately.
The fact that kids at this age don't actively follow gaming news or even care to, so they have no idea what's to come from Nintendo or whats even out there so they're content with the consoles are home and conforming to that.
I totally disagree. I think Nintendo's problem is the focus of the market changed to western games and the western market consideres their games "kiddy" because they are mainly an adolecent bunch with need to try and prove their adulthood.
That then results in alot of hate and with the widespread of the internet it become entrenched everywhere.
So, no. I would say Nintendo's problems are the haters. But, theres nothing they can do about that except improve themselves.
Definitly not related to fanboys at all. Fanboys are the ones keeping Nintendo afloat and beeing mature enough to be able to enjoy their games without calling out how kiddy they are, but how enjoyable the gameplay is.
This does end up on less 3rd party sales, but again, i think that is the result of the issue i originally brought up.

As someone who grew up with the NES (gulp!) and SNES I think what happened is this -- when the N64 came out and became basically a Nintendo/Rare-only box, Nintendo's fanbase splintered into two groups, the first group who enjoyed third party games but still were Nintendo fans grew frustrated with Nintendo and eventually left them for Sony or Microsoft. The second group became used to buying only Nintendo games on Nintendo platforms. As time went on this group became more and more narrow minded so that even Nintendo couldn't sell a wide variety of genres. For example NBA Courtside sold very well on the N64 from Nintendo in the late 90s, but even Nintendo couldn't sell that game on a Nintendo platform today. Nintendo fanboys have become Mario/Zelda/DK/Pokemon/Kirby fanatics, and even Nintendo games like Sin & Punishment or Star Fox or F-Zero aren't being made anymore because there isn't an audience left for those games. |
I've always thought the gamecubes problem was one simple thing: it was a purple box with a handle. I loved the GameCube, it was probably my favorite one of the three. I can't help but think it would have been taken more seriously if Nintendo made it look..... Normal. A rectangular design of some kind, make it black or grey, and more people would not have been embarrassed to own one. Cartideges in the n64 were the first nail in nintendos 3rd party coffin, the purple handled box was the last.
now, as far as wiiu owners not buying 3rd party games, that's because they aren't giving us everything for the money. In some cases they charge more than the other versions (deus ex, mass effect3 compared to the trilogy). As much as wiiu owners may be looking for an excuse to not buy a 3rd party game, 3rd parties are looking for excuses to make us not want to buy them either.

In that case, no game is better than the Nintendo World Championships 1990 on the NES because it is the most expensive. |
the argument is in regards to price justification. besides ppl don't buy nwc 90 to play with it.

Since Nintendo fans are blinded and don't want to see things from someone who is stating such things realistically, how about a quote from Iwata? When an investor asked Iwata how come there was only third party titles, here was part of Iwata's response.
"The other reason, he revealed, was that the company wishes to address the concern that only first-party games sell well on Nintendo systems. While the Nintendo DS shows no traces of this problem now, early on, it too caused similar concerns, which were quickly dispelled. The Wii, however, still faces the same stigma, and Iwata says that with the 3DS, Nintendo wish to create a healthy third-party environment right from the system’s launch. For this reason, they’re holding back their own software for the moment so that third-parties can enjoy the attention of the market."
Iwata is basically saying that Nintendo fans mainly buy first party and without giving third party publishers a chance to sell their product, they'll eventually lose support. Which as you can see three years later, he was right.

Nintendo Fanboys do not care if games are 3rd party or not but they do care about quality and are used to a very high standard that most 3rd party games are not able to meet. If you are grown up with A Link to the Past and Super Mario 64, you expect this level of quality to be the standard and won't play anything of lower production value.
The Wii-U in my opinion is another story, it is a failed console for some very good reasons:
1. The hardware is too weak and cannot compete.
2. It does not come bundled with Wiimote and Wii Sports HD.
3. Nobody needs this stupid, ugly, large, heavy and energy consuming tablet that cannot even be used without the main console.
4. The user interface is slow and inconvenient.
5. Most games are Kids-only.
6. There are not enough good games worth buying (In my opinion there is just Mario 3D Word at the moment).
7. There are no JRPGs at all.
9. Nintendo Fans from the 90s are grown up and want to play grown up games.
10. Where are the games at all?
It would be easy to solve all of those problems by dropping the tablet and taking some 3rd party investments and changes in development and marketing strategies but Nintendo obviously does not want to do that and is therefore doomed.

No but they do make up the vast majority of the early install base which is relevant to the discussion. These people (rightly) shouldnt put up with garbage ports and their spending habits show that. True fanboys will buy those games. The true fanboys sales are reflected in buying garbage just to support "this kind of game" on the platform of their choice. If there were more fanboys for Nintendo, sales of Assasins Creed, Mass Effect 3, Batman and so on would be closer to the million mark than the 50-100k mark. There is so few fanboys that they cant impress 3rd parties with sales on their half assed efforts.
Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Sigh. Another blame the consumer article. I own every Nintendo console. I own a lot of third party games on each one. I do buy Zelda every iteration because I love the series. I own very few Mario, Kirby, or Pokemon games, but I love stuff like S&P, Wonderful 101, and I will be front-and-center with Bayo 2, having enjoyed the first game. My Gamecube was proud home of Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Soulcalibur 2, and many other games I can't mention. Even on handhelds, I own a lot of third-party games alongside the Nintendo stuff. I also own every Sony console except the Vita, and the Xbox 360.
The problem is, Nintendo really does come out on top, nine times out of ten. Why would I want to buy the latest annual EAActiUbi crap when I could spend my money on games I will enjoy far more? It's not my job to give money to EAActiUbi just because they put out games. It's their job to make me feel that they are a worthwhile purchase. They're not going to make me feel it with the latest annual Battlefield of Duty Creed, they're not going to make me feel it when their games are so locked down with DRM it's ridiculous, and certainly not when it's a half-assed port on a Nintendo console like so many of their games have been of late. I don't even buy that garbage on PS3/PS4.
