I think part of Nintendo's problem is that kids are aging faster.
My nephews played wii from age 3 to 6 then started playing on the xbox360 and never looked back and all their friends are on xbox/ps3 in the same time frame. So if any of these kids have an older sibling or gamer dad, they're getting sucked into xbox/ps much faster or immediately.
The fact that kids at this age don't actively follow gaming news or even care to, so they have no idea what's to come from Nintendo or whats even out there so they're content with the consoles are home and conforming to that.
