Do you really see WiiU hiting 30M? ufff i dunno....

and XboxONE isnt going anywhere the levels of populartiy that 360 had. it has lost the advantages over SOny that were visual parity and lower pricepoint

Might be a tad low with Xb one, so 50M maybe, but I'll stick with my pessimistic estimate.

For home consoles, I'm thinking 7th gen will end up at around 285 million or so and I think the 8th gen will struggle to get past 180 million.

Something like:

PS4: 85-90 million
One: 60-65 million
Wii U: 22-25 million

Handhelds probably about:

3DS: 80-85 million
Vita: 20 million

Basically, I'm expecting the handheld and home consoles combined to sell about the same amount as the home consoles did alone in the 7th gen. If anyone wonders why; take a look at some of my posts in the UNITY thread, I have written fairly extensive posts on it in there (hint; I think this will be a short generation).

LOl so you expect a 230M HW units sold contraction? which is more than what i do

WHICH IS FUCKING CRAZY!

is the industry falling apart?

Not falling apart; branching out, dividing and heading for new waters. But; yes, I expect a rather big contraction of the traditional market and a short generation (about 5 years) with a flatter sales curve.

We had a similar thread a while ago. I don't remember my numbers, but I'm pretty sure I said it'd be up.

The current gen is clearly shaping out poorly for Nintendo.

As far as Sony and MS go, their home consoles this gen have been specifically designed to be profitable from day 1.
Both of them got burned last gen on that, Sony with BluRay costs and MS with RROD.
Nintendo if anything was EVEN MORE conservative in terms of power vs. costs,
with Wii U only using 40-45nm vs. the 28nm process Sony and MS are using, at the cost of power.
Of course, Nintendo blew that cost advantage with an expensive tablet controller that didn't help sales,
and a hardware config/development environment and online problems that alienated developers.

But MS and Sony's consoles are profitable with 1 game sale at launch
That is only on a direct basis, not accounting for R&D, but there is less R&D for this gen, at least for Sony.
(MS supposedly invested lots in Kinect 2)
The size of the gen doesn't really matter per se, they could switch to yearly platform updates
and the size of each gen would obviously drop, but that wouldn't matter if
yearly game sales are good and each gen is profitable.

It's clear that next gen will come faster than it did this time,
but that doesn't seem to reflect any actual problem for Sony and MS.
Nintendo... Nintendo.

The downside for shorter gen seems like it would be for exclusives,

if the install base never gets as large to justify as many awesome exclusives late in the gen. (or vice-versa, if those push out 3rd parties)

Then again, if the follow up gen is largely architecturally compatable, cross-gen exclusives are much easier and viable.

I see it like

8th gen

PS4 - 70 million
Xbox One - 50 million
3DS - 60 million
Wii U - 20 million
Vita - 15 million

Total: 215 million

Lets see...you dont count R&D as loss, you say Xbox and PS4 are profitable with a game which they are not, you say the install base doesnt matter as long as SW sales are stable, which goes against what Sony,Nintendo and Msoft are doing which is get a userbase as big as possible to steal SW deals, exclusives etc.

NO.
