PC always seemed like a strange place to be. Only Apple can get away with selling overpriced computers without having a budget line of computers where the proftability really exists on the basis of volume rather than margin. Sony tried to be a premium PC brand, but it doesn't work in PC-land.
I think Sony could reinvent itself a bit in TV, but starting a brand that does cater to the cheaper end of town, and can compete on volume with the other brands, and retain the Sony/Bravia brand for the high end. It would be weird for Sony to exit TV because they've been there forever. Funny thing is every time I've been in the market for a TV Bravia has always been exactly in my price/size/features sweet spot, so without intending to buy Sony the last 3 TV's I've bought have all been Sony, and that includes the last CRT TV I ever bought before getting into LCD. So I feel like Sony could stick it out with TV if they can change it up a bit. Kind of like the reverse of What Toyota did in cars, Toyota was always middle class to cheap cars, then they created the Lexux brand to get into the more luxury end of the market.
Seems like offloading PC is their attempt to get rid of one millstone, perhaps in the hopes of being able to carry the other millstone until it can start pulling its own weight. If Sony becomes basically only a finance company that makes game consoles it's just not a good balance. But maybe it should just be a Finance company, and have no tech divisions.
