Yes, everyone has noticed this.

That's all. In consoles, the Wii was basically smilar to the PS2/Xbox (probably about like Xbox in power). Being a 50% overclocked Gamecube with added RAM. Now the Wii U is basically on par with PS3/360.
Same in handhelds. DS was a gen behind PSP, and I dont follow handhelds but I'd guess 3DS is in PSP's class, where Vita is a gen beyond that.
So yep, not big revelation or statement here. One thing that interests me is if diminishing returns start kicking in, maybe one day Nintendo's strategy might work as the difference would shrink each gen. For now though, it's obviously not working out for Wii u at all. |
The DS and 3ds thing is somewhat true, but nothing else is. The wii signifcantly stronger than the gamecube, and the wiiu still is stronger than last gen. Just not a ton. Also, the previous two gens before the wii nintendo had bad sales. So, basically everything, including your edit is wrong. They weren't competitive, they were actually stronger than their sony rivals. They just gimped both in some way. That's nintendo's issue, they gimp every one of their consoles.
If WiiU is basically on par with PS360 then 3DS is on par with PSP which its totally NOT.
And I dunno if you can call it basic strategy if only 2 consoles are your "proof".
DS came out before the PSP so its not 1 gen behind because Nintendo had no idea what Sony was doing.
3DS is also not 1 gen behind Vita because 3DS is more powerful than PSP and has better shaders etc. Vita is 0.5 gens ahead .

OK, so Wii U is like a 10 year old Apple computer using Power architecture?
The 3DS is 3D, and if thats the future, then it is the Vita thats behind.

MS and Sony are a generation ahead leading to insane budgets which then leads to losses, loss of jobs, companies being shut down and the industry losing creativity. You either play it safe with your AAA titles or you make indie games otherwise you wont last long. |
What about PS4/XBone is preventing any dev from making games that would be graphically possible on a lower power console,
that require less budget to complete, etc?
If those would sell on a lower power console why can't those same customers play said games on a console with more power?
If anything, development would be CHEAPER on the more powerful console because they don't have to do ANY optimization,
while they would in fact need to on a less powerful console to get the most out of it.

How is Nintendo creating new ways to play, more so than what Sony, MS, or PC do?
If anything I would say the opposite, Nintendo just milks it's old IP forever,
yet it's games get good ratings despite games on Sony/MS getting rated down if they are considered 'unoriginal'.

Read articles from Slightly Mad Studios and Shi'nen Multimedia, watch Hector Martin's 30c3, figure out the missing 30% of the decapped chip and tell us all what it's function is, buy a Wii U and THEN comment and some here MIGHT take your opinion with a grain of salt... |
Hey, instead of name dropping to demonstrate your superiority, perhaps try ACTUALLY COMMUNICATING...?
| Trunkin said: Actually, that's not necessarily true in the case of Nintendo handhelds. They've followed a linear progression from day one.
GB/C = NES GBA = SNES NDS = N64 3DS = GC/Wii 4DS = Wii U? |
Came in to post this. It seems as if Nintendo is applying its highly successful handheld strategy to the home console market, and it worked... initially. Simply being the cheapest option is not going to make a massive difference on its own, regardless of a console's power.

But the assets that studios create are already in massive high resolutions and the models are in the count of millions of polygons. No console or PC can use these assets at real time (an example, Uncharted 3 original assets would have hundreds of GB). So you just create high quality assets and downgrade them to real time. What they do with Wii U is just downgrade it more. |
Sure, as far as multi-platforms go, that is true, downgrading assets isn't too much of a problem, and to that extent closer peformance to other consoles requires less console-specific work in that area. But as far as exclusives, something like Mario is just not using the same detail assets as typical games on the other consoles, the entire art style goes against that level of detail and the entailed cost.
| torok said: About dev, Wii U would actually be more expensive, since PS4, One and PC share a similar architecture. You do a game for them and them have to rethink a lot of things for Wii U. An example is if you use GPGPU (a given with the newer consoles weaker CPU, the focus is on the GPU). Wii U uses a older shader model, so you have to rewrite your code basically from scratch. And you have the devs complaining about Wii U's SDK quality and the CPU. Sony and MS simply went with better development toolkits and machines with a better architecture and that drives costs down. Try to drive costs down by holding inovation isn't the solutions. Better SDKs and more direct architectures are the answer. I've read at some week about the game The Crew. The PS4 version was ported from the PC (since the game was in development long before the dev kits arrived). They ported it in 2 months with 5 guys. That's how you improve costs, with more tech, not with less. |
This is spot on, and again emphasizes Nintendo's weakness re: multiplatforms... Both on a theoretical power basis and architecture basis they are just so different from the other consoles that trying to shoe-horn crossplatforms into their platform requires a large amount of work to just have a worse experience. The best porting can only have slightly less worse experience, because the console just can't handle it.
