Forums - Gaming - What if Kinect was introduced with Xbox One instead of 5 years into the 360's life cycle?

People would have gone batshit crazy over it and it would be a Wii-like phenomenon. The original boosted 360 sales but it left a bad taste in the mouth of many.

If it had games like Dance Central with the Kinect 2's technology it would have made a huge impact. Imagine if they would have saved it and allowed Halo 4 more time to cook and had it as a launch title.... Things would be very different right now.  They would have had both the casual and core all wet and ready.

I think it would have been even worse. Microsoft hasn't done much to show off the Kinnect to gamers, and motion controls feel like last gen. It's the lack of Kinnect games that make me resent the added price.

This is the point, the Kinect bait and switch would have worked, much like it did for the Wii.. Maybe not as much, but it would have created a lot of curiosity for a lot of people, buzz...

now, even if it's bundled in, it's treated like the six axis cintrols on the ps3 controllers... Some implement "extra controls" with it, and nodody cares much for it... (Unless they play dance or fitness games, but I would think these games work just as well on the original kinect)

it would have pushed sales. especially with some kinect only titles.

It would seem way cooler now but 360 would have done much worse. Overall though, launching it with One probably would have given the system monster hype.

Regardless of when, gamers would have quickly figured out it was a worthless gimmick and adds nothing to their gaming experience.

Maybe so, but that didn't stop the original Kinect from selling 20+ million. It would still attract people because of the 'cool' factor. I doubt the effects of the gimmick would wear off after 2 months.

It would be a lot slower though. The original Kinect also had the add-on option and cheap 4gb arcade bundle option. With a new supply constrained $500 console the hype would have died down long before 20 million sales. It was also the perfect time to jump in to motion controls right after the Wii reached it's peak.

But yes it would have been a selling point for the XBox One instead of having negative connotations of motion controls in general.

I agree. It was a mistake for them to introduce it on 360. People forget that the Wii-mote originally started off as a Gamecube accessory. Nintendo looked at the history of add-on peripherals and decided to wait until their next hardware launch. MS should have done the same.

You brought up a lot of good points in your previous post, there are a lot of variables to the scenario of course. I don't think the One would be selling nearly as fast as the Kinect did, I just think it would help keep the systems neck in neck for at least the first year. There probably wouldn't be talks of a price cut so soon either.

Granted, things might also be completely different if they didn't blow the reveal so badly.
