The finish line is when all three manufacturers quit selling that generation of consoles.  Just because another gen started, it doesn't mean the last gen is over.

Multiple generations exist and overlap.  Someone forgot to send you the memo. Sorry.

No. It's the 8th gen now. The 7th is over.

This is a pointless semantic argument. Nintendo fans would love to sweep that gen under the rug in case of 360/PS3 sales surpassing Wii's, though. That's all I take away from this conversation continuing. If PS3 or 360 overtake Wii sales, what it does prove is that those consoles are ultimately a better value as they are getting continued software support. That's just my opinion, but continuing this conversation is pointless as you can't really define when a generation is over. Question is: If PS3 sales pass the Wii's are Nintendo fans just going to discredit it because the "7th gen was over"? I know the answer to that, but god is that a silly, fanboyish way of looking at things.

And Sony fans would love to extend the 7th gen into the 8th to try to paint the PS3 as the winner it wasn't.

Again, this is a semantic argument. But, I'm sure they'd like that. Hell, you might see me embed a youtube video of Queen's "We are the Champions" just to irk some Nintendo fans, if that does happen. I have reason to believe that it will, but looking at current sales trends, there's a good chance it won't overtake Wii sales. :P Either way, neither side is actually correct as to which side "wins" -- when talking about generations starting and ending points, anyway.

Fair enough.

To the above, unfortunately it currently looks like PS3/360 are falling off so fast they wont surpass Wii. It currently looks like their best hope is to struggle just past 90 million.

Unless some sort of emerging markets sales can give them more legs than expected,. but if that was going to happen it should already have started.

It's pretty surprising how drastically last gen sales fell in all areas. even for me, a sophisticated sales watcher who knew it would happen.

I always thought none of the big three focussed enough on emerging markets. (Though Sony do a better job than Nintendo and Microsoft)

Read again. I also think it's likely it won't happen. The only hope is that there is a load of budget gamers out there waiting for price drops. Your last sentence is kinda funny, though. How can you be surprised by something you knew was going to happen? lol

I guess it's little surprising it happened so fast even for me. Or even though i knew it would happen, it's another thing to see it in real time.

Maybe for you, but out of the 260,000,000 consoles sold in the 7th gen, only 15,000,000 have been replaced with next gen consoles.  So you could say that 245,000,000 gamers do not agree that the 7th gen is over.

He shouldn't even have to say that. It is common knowledge. Maybe he should have made a diagram so some people can understand this better.

But Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo agree that it's the 8th gen now, and they are ones who decide by releasing next gen systems.

That's kind of a duh issue. PS4 is not the MASSIVE leap over PS3 that some seem to think it is, while Wii U was substantially more powerful than Wii hardware.
