Well no it's pretty obvious. If the PS3 launched on the same day as 360 at the same price as 360, it would have won the UK handily.

Personally I thought MS would be able to hold onto it's strong markets, because additionally to brand loyalty and recognition they already have a lot of people that invested heavily in digital content, so if the X1 was fully backwards compatible I think they could have easily convinced them to stay in their ecosystem. Just like switching smartphone platforms becomes tougher the more you are invested in the respective ecosystem.

Sony never was in a position to realistically offer PS3 b/c in it's next console, as it's non-standard parts like the Cell and the XDR ram have performance spikes in some areas you can't really reproduce with off-the-shelf components.

That ecosystem was not much of a factor at the start of 8th gen is pretty surpring to me, but I'm 99% sure all console manufacturers will try to emulate what apple and google are doing and make sure to offer full b/c and even limited f/c in the future, as they are in a good position to do so with the components they choose.

Brand loyaly in the UK isn't as strong as people think. The many left PS2 behind for the Wii long ago. Gamers bought the 360 as it was cheaper and others bought it because 'their friends had it'. Now this next gen, casuals are playing phones/tablets while gamers are buying the cheaper PS4, overtime their friends will buy PS4.

Once the hard-core have bought their consoles, the gap will widen. Low price higher spec will surely maintain if non widen that a lot.

It probably would have, yes. But that doesn't mean Xb one would have done the same this time 'round. PS3 was coming off the back of 2 dominant generations. People assume MS had won the hearts and minds of the UK, but it barely beat out Wii. But who's to say that PS4 wouldn't still be in the lead in the UK, only by not as much, if MS had played their hand better?  It's possible that loads of people decided to put Sony in time out for a generation and go with 360 and go back to Sony if they deliver a quality PS4 at a comparable price, and only stay with MS if Sony pulls another PS3 on them.

MS has probably grown its base of loyal support, but it's also pretty clear from the sales results so far that it's a long way short of the total 360 user base. There was always going to be a reasonable swing market and some were always going to swing to PS4. With PS3 Sony more or less found it's loyal base of support, and it's a pretty big base. We don't really know MS's loyal base of support but this generation might reveal it.

One they get more constant shipments coming into the UK, I reckon it will be 2:1
