Forums - Sales - Will the 3ds total sales reach those of the gba before a successor is released?

In march 2014 the 3ds will have been on the market for 3 full years with 42 million units sold right now.
If a new unit will be released in 2016 (which imo would feel rather late), the 3ds will only have 2014 and 2015 left in the spotlight

lets be generous and assume it will sell another 15 million units in 2014 and 2015.

depending on the launch period in 2016 it's going to be very very tricky.

OT: Its hard to say at this point. It all depends on Nintendo and Nintendo alone. If they want to keep this HW in the market it surely will beat 81M. dunno if BEFORE the next gen system launches which was your question.

I would say No to your question, and YEs to 3DS beating GBA Lifetime sales

If Nintendo pulls another DSi, that is, another model whose sales will be counted under 3DS even though it has new features, then yes.

It's about as good as any dedicated gaming handheld will ever do in this market. Smartphones and tablets have become too large.

It wasn't very long ago that people kept telling me I was being ridiculous for saying that the 3DS would sell a lot less than the DS, it was also impossible that it would sell less than 100 million lifetime.

It's important to keep in mind that the GBA sold well over 15 million, and possibly over 20 million, after the DS launched. (The DS launched end 2004, the GBA shipped 14.7 million in FY06, FY07, FY08, FY09 and FY10 combined. However, it also shipped 15.4 million in the FY the DS launched, which means it almost definitely sold 5 million in that FY, after the DS launched. Probably far more)

Similarly, the DS has sold over 10 million after the 3DS launched.

If we imagine the 3DS successor launches on January 1st 2016, then the 3DS is likely to be at roughly 70 million sold (assuming 14 million sold in 2014 and 2015, which seems likely). A postlife similar to the DS will then put it roughly equal with the GBA in total sales.

If the successor releases later in the year, then the 3DS is likely to see higher sales than the GBA.

 

My bet would be that the 3DS will be below the GBA when the successor releases, but above the GBA when the 3DS has finished selling.
