It'll be interesting to see what their approach is here.

I'd say there are three routes that are really optional for them here

1) Beginning to distribute "supporting materials" on mobile stores, a basic approach which will draw no actual revenue from mobile, but trying to use mobile as a more aggressive advertising platform (my bet's on this)
2) Nintendo tablet (middle likelihood)
3) Direct provision of Nintendo software to current mobile platforms (least likely)

Only 1) seems realistic to me and I think it would be the best approach anyways.

Seems to me that number 1 is the one that best fits the Nintendo philosophy, and also poses the least risk in the short term. I think you're on the right idea here.

I'd like to add on your first point's next phase would not just be advertisements but a likelihood of experimental apps perhaps Miiverse, or Nintendo Video (3DS)...

Or, are these actually what you meant?

More or less. Perhaps more interactive and series-focused in some ways, like an interactive Hyrule Historia app for when the next Zelda comes out.
