Forums - Sony - If someone bought PlayStation Brand who would you want it to be?

C'mon you guys, you're only throwing around names here! Why would Disney buy the PS brand? As far as I know, they don't own any form of hardware, so why would they start now? And why would MS buy PS? They might buy individual developers and IP's, but not the PS brand; they've already got Xbox - why the hell would they need another hw brand?

Realistically, it would be a BIG company with A LOT of money looking to enter the gaming market.

Is that Apple? Nope. They'd probably just make their own console, and besides, they're not much of a software company, so the PS brand wouldn't do them no good; they haven't made a single game for iOS - so why would they start making video games?

Could it be Samsung? Maybe. They're a consumer electronic business, and PS would fit that bill quite nicely, but as with Apple, I've never heard of them making any sort of software, so starting to make games doesn't sound like a solid business plan for them.

I think the entire PS brand would get sold off piece by piece, because very few companies (if any) would be interested in the whole package.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I think it makes very little sense for Nintendo or MS to pick up Playstation, as both of these already have similarly strong brands in the video game console business. They would ofcourse be very interested in hiring former Sony 1st party devs, but I doubt it's worthwhile to them to spent much on the Playstation brand, the franchise catalogue or the dev studios.

Ms might go for it anyway (as their pockets are deep enough) to acquire the few franchise that have shown great popularity, like Uncharted, Gran Turismo, Killzone or The Last of Us, but I think they might rather wait until these are sold/auctioned off individually.

As for Apple, Google, Samsung or LG, well, those could be interested in the franchises and a Playstation Now-esque service (for their Smartphones and/or TVs), but I don't see them joining the console market and game development is a rather uninteresting business especially for Apple and Google, due to it's high risk/low reward kind of nature with only very few smash hits, that reach the kind of ROI these corps are used to.

In my opinion the most likely corps to release new playstation consoles and probably the highest bidders for the Playstation business as a whole could be the chinese technology corps, like Lenovo, Huawei or Tencent (or maybe even the smaller ones, as several have surprisingly deep pockets, but lack a recognisable brand in the west).

Nintendo so that competitive hardware and mature games would combine with their awesome family friendly games. This would help not only nintendos game library but it's whole image

They buy it just for fun, and let ex Sony employees carry on running the playstation brand as it is now.

I think apple or amazon could realistically afford to buy sony

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Hardware units should be made by hardware companies, so Samsung. They can do a deal to keep SCE games on it exclusively with Sony and all would be good.

Hmm, pie.

I think if push comes to shove, the Playstation brand would be the very last thing to leave Sony's hold. I believe, to this day, that it is their most iconic product and their best shot at fame and glory. I don't think they would sell it.

But, if someone were to buy it, let's have Samsung dip their fingers into gaming and see what comes of it.
