Heavens no.

The game is far, far past its prime.  Although I'll admit the new expansion does look like it has nostalgic potential, Blizzard put out two sub-par expansions in a row (Cataclysm & Mists) and I don't believe there's much that's going to change that trajectory.

Sadly, a lot of the game's great content from Vanilla/Burning Crusade/Wrath is inaccessibe or can easily be blitzed through with a max level character.  Which I suppose is great if you just want to go through and see the lore, but you'd be missing out on so much of the experience by doing that.  They should really add classic servers to the game.

Also, it's addictive as you rightly mention.  Too addictive.  I have fond memories of playing WoW but objectively I would have to say that it ruined a large portion of the ~ 4 years of my life that I played it.

And I believe that many of the good players no longer play anymore.  Although there's always exceptions, my old server is like a ghost town with few people who made the game great during BC still around.  

If you really enjoy Warcraft lore I'm sure you can watch all the important cutscenes and stuff on youtube; and fill yourself in with major guild videos of the boss fights which are always well done.  But as an experience, I'd probably warn against it at this point. 

If you've never played before, it's still a solid game and there is some fun to be had.  Just be careful.

Both are crap.
Guild Wars 2 has pretty much no Endgame or raiding content.
FFXIV is still not finished and needs time to get where it should be.At least it won't go F2P and turn into shit cause it can survive with low Sub Numbers.
WoW even in its current state which is far far away from former glory is still the best MMORPG out there by miles if you want to stay in the Genre for more than 1 month.

If you want a MMORPG you should play World of Warcraft
Even in its current state there is nothing to come even close and never will be,at least not in the near future.The new Addon should be out this year right?
Get yourself comfortable with the game right now where its pretty much over with the Mists of Pandaria Addon.You have all the time of the world and can experience things as easy as possible.Level up and do some dungeons.
At this point in the addon you probably won't have a chance getting into them without to  join the Dungeon Finder Tool followed by the Looking for Raid tool to get an unstressed idea of the game.
BUT keep in mind > Those people you meet in those tools are not reflecting the community at all.For that you really need to join a guild,make some friends and stuff.


If you want to get and stay into the Genre and experience the highest quality possible > Get World of Warcraft,learn it now when it isn't stressful cause it is at the end of the current Addon and play then the upcoming Addon for real.
Most important thing is Self Control - You can achieve everything in the game with only a few hours a week currently.There is no reason to spend more than that if you aren't in a Hardcore Progression Raid which wants the World First Bosskills of new content.Even with a normal Guild Raid a few hours a week are more than enough to achieve everything you want in this game.
There is a big difference between being efficient or wasting 10 hours a day with standing around in town and cursing at people how much of no life they have for  having better equipment xD
Most people talking bad about WoW either didn't have the self control,wasted to much time ingame and achieved nothing in the game while they thought they deserve the best and other things.You have to think you play with humans.Some are jelly,some are nice,some don't care for you and others.
Those jealous people share all at some point the same mentality...
Everyone better than you is a fat ugly nerd with no life who plays 24/7 and everyone worse is a damn noob.
If you experience the Looking for Raid Tool to learn raiding don't take the people there serious - At least 8/10 people there are those who wouldn't fit into any guild/real Raid.Everyone is at fault except them.
So if you meet nice people in that game which are willing to show you some things and aren't idiots(the bad kind) in general > Make them your friends and maybe join a guild.
Over the years they changed a lot for the people who don't want to play in groups or communicate at all but they don't reflect the real experience of a MMORPG and especially not WoW.

If you want a MMORPG with steady quality you need to play World of Warcraft and a subscription model.
If you want some of the others wait till they go F2P - Elder Scrolls Online will go F2P at the end or early next  year probably cause it is bad and won't survive cause of lacking Endgame.It will have the same fate as Star Wars Online.Pumping 250 Million into boring quests while having Raid Content my Cat could clear.ESO has even less + broken combat system from 1950.

If you want to wait then wait for Wildstar.
It is PROBABLY the closest you will get to the quality of World of Warcraft as far as the Beta goes.Though it will probably be a much harder experience than the current WoW and you can't tell how it turns out at the end.
A lot of people who worked on WoW Classic and Burning Crusade(the first addon) work on Wildstar.

NEVER expect anything from F2P MMORPGs
Aion,Tera,Star Wars The Old Republic,Rift,Neverwinter,Guild Wars 2 and all the others are garbage and you will see this after a certain amount of time.
People saying those are good are those who play 1-2 hours a week and think it has amazing content.
I remember the Star Wars The old Republic Release pretty good > We cleared the Raid Content before most people even came close to max Level and so did some others and they posted this in the forums > What should we do now?Is this all?People with level 20 chars said "THIS game is sooo awesome - The cool 250 Million $ Story and stuff - There is enough content for YEARS"...YEAH NO!1 week and it was clear cause they wasted time with telling an Offline Game Story in a MMORPG which will only survive with Endgame Content > Turned into F2P pretty fast =)

They all lack big in some parts of the game > Mostly the Endgame.Nothing comes close to the quality of the Content World of Warcraft offers and especially not it's Endgame.Most of them above were even Subscription based and failed cause of that and only of that.Even if WoW dropped a lot in Quality(no one will deny that) it is still the best one out there by far.
You have to think easily 70% of the people playing one of those new  MMORPGs in the first month are people who either played or still play World of Warcraft before they switch back after the free month is over.Those people who played WoW and stoped to wait for a new one will probably play WoW after the new MMORPG failed cause they licked blood again.
Elder Scrolls Online will be in the same situation > They will say in the first month "WE HAVE 5 Million Subs" > The free month is over and they will drop down to 1 Million and less(depending how much the console versions will weigh in but thats probably one of the reasons why at least the Beta is a big pile of shit) over time.Same happened btw with Final Fantasy 14 but...
Final Fantasy XIV is the only reasonable choice besides WoW currently.Though it is a lot easier and slower at the same time.Understandable cause they can't expect from everyone to have raiding experience.I heard at release people crying over Titan Hardmode and stuff but this is so easy if you experienced WoW Raiding.The mechanics there are easier than some Level 20 5 man dungeons in WoW.
Maybe in the future they add some challenge to the game(don't know how the latest patch is and what they added cause it was already after the first month when most people left cause they got bored) when the remaining ~500 000 Subs have enough experience.Cause somehow the Final Fantasy MMORPGs stay sub based even with such low numbers and so SquareEnix will probably pump out more and more(and hopefully better) Content over time.
Would love to come back to it someday - Maybe even with the PS4 Version just for an extra unit.

Don't listen to anyone about F2P games, they suck. GW2 was fun for awhile but lost it's charm really fast and has virtually no end game content.

If you want to play MMO's then WOW is by far the best, it may not be as great now as it was during Vanilla/BC/WOTLK but it is leagues better than anything else.

WildStar is looking promising, so maybe try that, otherwise play wow. 15 dollars a month may seem like a lot, but that's only because most people don't realize they spend a lot more than that per month on other games that they will spend 10-15 hours on before they get bored of it.

I'm on Defias Brotherhood PvP, and Argent Dawn RP. I play on Horde mainly now, but I have two max levels on Alliance too.

omg no its the biggest time waster kind of game ever. And especially money waster.

This kind of games is the worst kind of game ever.

When you actually start to get bored you will keep playing because in a few months you will say "I spend 4000000 dollars per month now quitting would mean I payed all that for nothing so I keep playing otherwhise I wasted money" also because you feel to participate in the "being the best among all/guild/friends etc competition" and because you want to chat with your guild members etc. (not because the game is great which it is NOT but just to have people to talk to about games)

The sooner you quit the better and if soon means before you even start THATS THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO.
The main goal of any mmorpg is to make people addicted. Any game that wants to do this = KILL IT BEFORE IT LAYS EGGS!

If you need to play an MMORPG go play a free one. RFOnline or Silkroad or SwordOfTheNewWorld etc. but when you waste time please dont also waste money.

It's not a waste if you are using your time wisely and having fun.

My 6+ years of playing have definitely not been a waste.

1 - you are getting really fleeced on the cost of game time.

2 - free to play games are not free, you always pay. Games don't run on nothing.

3 -  Try the shift key rather than the caps lock key.
