Forums - Microsoft - New Sunset Overdrive artworks - Xbox One exclusive "is not an MMORPG" "It will have a story and a campaign," says Tim Salvitti

There remains precious little to say about Insomniac's gaudy, gory Sunset Overdrive, but we do have a few new concept artworks to chew over. They're new to me, anyway. Additionally, community web developer Tim Salvitti has clarified that the game isn't, in fact, an MMO, though it does have some rather impressive-sounding online features.

"This is not a MMORPG," Salvitti observed over on the Insomniac forums last month. "It will have a story and a campaign. It is an open-world, 3rd person action game if you want to categorize it." The game isn't online-only either, though Insomniac is "intrigued" by what's possible using the Xbox One cloud.

According to studio boss Ted Price, Sunset Overdrive's colourful city isn't "just an open world - it's a living world. The idea is that we're updating the game on a regular basis," he told OXM at E3 last year. "Not just updating it with stuff that we want, but also by what players tell us, and inspired by what players are doing in the game.

"Adding or changing weapons based on what players tell us is an opportunity we haven't really had during the current generation. Because if you want to put out regular updates, you have to jump through a lot of hoops. So our intent is not to just to offer new weapons, but new gameplay features that change up the environment." Such features might include outbreaks of unseasonable weather, or an explosion of enemies.

"We want players to talk about what happens in the game, get really engaged and connected, because they never know what's going to happen, but they have an influence," Price concluded.

Thirsty for more? Alas, Insomniac has nothing further to share for the moment, as discussed in faintly absurd style on Twitter.

@SunsetOverdrive How many more weeks or months until we hear/see something about this game?

Sunset Overdrive @SunsetOverdrive

@sirvanquish they are getting fewer and fewer by the day. We're working really hard on the game!

Still sounds promising. Need gameplay videos though.

Yup.

That's some old-ass concept art. To be honest, the complete visual silence on showing any kind of gameplay from the title is a little alarming at this point, but Insomniac are Insomniac... I have faith.

Still, I'm glad they clarified that the game isn't online-only, that's definitely a positive in my book.

I wonder how this game will end up doing. Sounds like they have big ambitions for the title with the whole constantly-keeping-it-updated business. They'd need to net better sales than they have been doing lately for that to be a viable option; but with Microsoft's advertising money behind it that may just happen, who knows.

Eye on this one. Hopefully its a sleeper hit. Cmon Insomniac, after the terrible Resistance series Redeem yourselves.

The Resistance series has some of their highest rated games over the past decade.

Resistance: 86, Resistance 2: 87, Resistance 3: 83.

If anything I'd be hoping for at least quaility on par with Resistance, rather than the abominations that were some of the recent Ratchet games, and the god-awful Fuse.

I liked Resistance.  One of the best Story FPS games in my opinion.  Specially Resistance 3

Really looking foward to this game but we should have gotten a gameplay video by now.
