Forums - Gaming - Visuals for Wii U Zelda: My Serious Problem with the Fandom

This needs to be said. I'm pissed.

This was going to be a post about how the art style of "Zelda U" was not going to be what we saw in the tech demo. How it was not going to be what essentially is a high-res Twilight Princess with what ever assortment of color pallet applied because you think that that would be enough to make it look "different."

I was going to discuss this, not because it was what I wanted, but because Eiji Aonuma explicitly confirmed that the Zelda U's art style would be something unique that we will have "never seen before." He wanted to pleasantly surprise fans and keep the series fresh. He went on to say that he didn't want Zelda to look "realistic" because that's something you can come across in many games.

This is clearly contrasts the touted "realism" that many people want Zelda U to be. And let's be clear, the guy's not stupid. When he says "realistic," he's obvoisly not talking about GTA/COD/Skyrim realistic. He's talking about Twilight Princess. He's talking about the tech demo. All off them. Every Zelda one ever made that does this. The "fantasy realism." He wanted a unique artstyle that surprised fans.

The guy was trying to be fucking creative.

But I've been speaking in the past tense so far. Why is that? Because in searching for that quote, I found this instead:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129310-Zelda-Producer-We-Have-to-be-More-Careful-With-Zeldas-Artstyle

“We encountered an awful lot of problems from the drastic leap we took with Wind Waker. I think we will be a bit more careful in the future, but if we find a new approach that not just the developers, but also the users would enjoy then I think we will want to break new ground again. But we haven’t found such an approach yet.” - Eiji Aonuma

This is discusting. Not Aonuma. The fans with their disgusting bullshit banter about how Zelda needs to be this or needs to be that and if it's not like the tech demo, than Aonuma's on the shit list. And now the guy is sacrificing his artisic integrity to please a fanbase of snot nosed monsters who don't deserve it.

Because of the outrage that was sparked with Wind Waker, and more importantly, because of the absolute rage that hasn't ended since Wind Waker, the guy is litterally afraid to be fully creative with his game. Not our game. His. It's his art and we just have the humble privalage of enjoying it. And now the guy is not going to go through with a potencially beatiful game because it may not fit under the "Zelda" bubble? The guy is literally afraid to be creative with his own game.

Now we don't get a completely unique spin on Zelda's look with each new instalment. Now we'll just get games that look "Zelda-like." There will just be a "Zelda-look." There will always be a strong similarity because every game has to look a sertain way to be acceptable.

And I don't give a shit if Zelda Wii U looks like the tech demo, or cell shaded, or impressionistic, or gray and brown, or realistic, or cartoony, or black and white, or steam punk, or cyber punk, or clay-mation, or stop motion, or anything, because I'm a gamer and I care about the fucking gameplay. Art is fucking subjective. Zelda is a game franchise that DOES NOT have a standard art style. There is no "real" Zelda look. You know what the most used Zelda art style is? Wind Waker's. You know what the least used one is? EVERYTHING ELSE.

Aonuma said that the entire reason the Wind Waker came into fruition was because of the artstyle. That came first. They where struggling with ideas, and then someone showed him a concept sketch for Toon Link. That's what inspired everything. It inspired the Moblin's design, then the combat, than the setting, and like a snowball in an avalanche, the ideas kept growing and growing into what it is today: one of the, if not the greatest game of all time. One of the most beautiful. One of the most well crafted. One of the most sayisfying. One of the most adventerous. One of the most of initially criticized initially.

The fact that the guy has become so afraid of fan rage over something as conpletely subjective as art design, that he would willingly conprimise his own is discusting, and if you're one of the people who's lent a hand in this, you're a problem not only to the Zelda franchise, but to all of gaming. You're scum to me. You're scum to gaming. You're scum to art. You're scum to expression. It's one thing to have an opinion about something worth having an opinion about, like an artstyle ing a video game. "Hey. I like this art style. Hey. I didn't like that art style. Hey. I hope they do something like this." It's another thing entirely to demonize an artist for not fulliling your vision of what you think his painting should look like. "Seriously, Aonuma needs to stop screwing with Zelda. He's gotten to many chances to fuck up each Zelda game since which ever one is my own personal favorite. It all went down hill since my favorite Zelda was released, and even though my opinion of those critically acclaimed games are entirely subjective, my personal dislike for how they don't look like my favorite one is obviously true anyway. He needs to grow up with the fans and give them the game everyone obviously wants. If this game doesn't look like my narrow minded opinion, if it doesn't look exactly like the tech demo/twilight princess/Skyward Sword/Wind Waker/A Link to the Past/Ocarina of Time, he's fucked up for the last time in my book and he's a cancer to the franchise."

If you don't don't think that you're one of these people, than ignore this rant completely, or offer you opinions on the matter. I have respect for you. If you feel like you are on of these people, then I have absolutely no problems with telling you to cleanly go fuck yourself. You're a problem to creativity and you're a problem to gaming.

Malstrom has been telling everyone this for years.

Nintendo will go out of their way to not give customers what they're asking for in the same of 'surprise' and 'creativity'.

And having a single person continue to make all the key choices for a series no matter how badly their previous decisions fail is toxic.

Aounma has enough credit...but if hes scrwes up like the last time, i myself will ask for his resignation

Every mainline Zelda game since Ocarina of Time has gotten a 90+ on Metacritic. You may personally think that he has continuously failed, but the majority liked of his "surprise" and "creativity," myself included. There is nothing about Aonuma's decisions that is "toxic." He has never "failed." He's messed up, like everyone, and as A Link Between World shows, he's learned, like everyone. You may be apart of the loud minority, but it is the minority. Reviews show it.

As one of Nintendo's customers, I have never asked anything of Aonuma except to continue making my favorite games. I certainly never asked him to make Zelda more realistic or grounded or anything.

There's a clear difference between creating art and create a videogame.Videogames have to please certain people to achieve success. They need their backup to remain in the bussiness.A lot of people lives depend on the success or fail of a single game.So it's only natural they feel this pressure coming from Zelda fans.

I don't mean what fans say on message boards, I mean what customers say through SALES. The series has sold best when it was Ocarina or Twilight Princess.

The core Zelda fanbase that keeps buying games isn't enough to justify five year, massive, HD game projects.

Pretty big rant for a game that is not released and we know nothing about yet. 3 things:

1. When it comes out with whatever art style people will say it looks amazing
2. No matter how it plays, people will say it plays amazing.
3. When it is released Eiji will be satisfied with his own product.

You don't know what happened behind the scenes of other games you love. But you don't care because you don't know and just assume that the creators had all the freedom(which is probably not true). If you think this is the first time a producer took steps to limit the creativity of his team you are naive.
He is a producer. His job is not only that the game is good but also that the game will appeal to its target audience. Deal with it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

What last time? Last time I heard, Skyward Sword was critically praised. This guy was able to somehow hide technical incapabilities of the Wii behind beautiful art. THAT IS GENIUS. On top of that, the combat system for the game is one of the greatest EVER. This game was universally critically praised. Videos comparing it to Ocarina were uploaded daily on to Youtube. But ofcourse, give it a couple months, and anything that is ever good or praised has to be soured by the cynisism of the internet. ANYTHING good or popular has to be completely bashed, and now I see comments about how it sucks, the story wasnt good, the gamepaly was aweful, blah blah blah. Same for Twilight princess. Everyone loved it, said it was better than Ocarina, then a couple years later, theirs the hate towards it, finding every single little flaw and bloating it.

It sold best at Ocarina because that was the first 3D Zelda, it was a huge shift, it was entirely different, it was somthing to talk about. Ofcourse it would sell more. It sold more than Majora's Mask, which had even more darker and sophisticated world and story. And twilight princess? That became the best selling Zelda for multiple reasons. Many were excited for a shift in art style after WindWaker, The hype for the game was phenominal, and it launched aside the Wii, the best selling launch week ever on record prior to the PS4 and Xbox One.
