One thing I know about Nintendo is that it doesn't matter what console they release their games for. As long as it it priced at a point where people who generally buy their games are happy (say 200$CAD) and they pump out games for it, it will sell games.

The WiiU only fails by virtue of lack of games. Sure, the pricepoint is way too high due to the gamepad, but other than that it really just needs games and fast so Nintendo can make money selling them.

The games also need to be localized and advertised aggressively. At the moment I feel like they have 0 mindshare.

History of Nintendo consoles doesn't show that it's enough to just make their games.  The console needs something unique that clicks with the generation.

  • NES 61.91
  • SNES 49.10
  • N64 32.93
  • GC 21.74
  • Wii 100.95
  • Wii U 5.34

One of these numbers does not belong (and it's not the Wii U).

NES => Games

Wii => Games

this doesnt make much sense. DId the SNES not have games? they had follow up to every major NES game but still sold less. Explain

Wii U is getting follow ups to the most popular WIi games but is tracking below GC. Explain.

Wii => User base built on hype, which lifted all boats.

What, the N64 didn't have games like Mario, Kart, Party, Ocarina, Pokemon, Smash Bros, Goldeneye, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Banjo Kazooie, Wave Race?  My favorite Nintendo platform since the SNES, but it wasn't enough because of competition.  The NES just didn't have the same steady competition that Nintendo is up against now IMO.

I was going to make a thread about this. I think it's just that consumers care less and less for Nintendo consles each generation.

No competition. Nintendo doesn't compete against anybody, look at their handheld line to give you an idea.

The handheld is another business, where yes they have not had much competition or remained one step ahead IMO.

But again I am surprised why people assume Nintendo "one-offs" in the console space can actually be extended into "trends".  The only trend was that Nintendo's console business was shrinking for 23 years, with exception of one outlier.

Nintendo's lacking experience in HD developent in combination with 3DS's initial struggles is what has been holding their aggressive releases back. That's why we got New Super Mario Bros. U instead if "Galaxy 3", Wind Waker HD and Hyrule Warriors instead of a new Zelda, Namco helping Sakurai develop Smash Bros. 4, Luigi's Mansion 2 on 3DS instead of Wii U, Donkey Kong Country: TF instead of a 3D Metroid, and countless release date delays. This also put games with high risk - low reward in terms of profit like Star Fox and F-Zero out of the question completely.

Nintendo's teams were/are still, in terms of size and experience, SD video game developers. This will change in due time but until then, please understand.

The one outlier that showed that so long as Nintendo supports with games, sales happen. Coupled with the initial condition of NES, it holds together.

Maybe... but that "so long as" is an outlier condition for Nintendo :P.

It's not like they have reduced their R&D.  Nintendo has increased their development expenditure every year.  The Wii was a weak console and it's games looked shit but sold well.  A unique phenomenon of cheap development and high profits.  Now Nintendo has jumped to PS360 level, development cost and time has undoubtedly risen.

haha, well played.

Please understand doom is in Nintendo's DNA ;D

NES was sold for 10 years on the market. SNES suffered from what we call competition.

Look at NIntendo's handhelds.

They are far more balanced than Nintendo's consoles and it shows.

They're not working at PS360 level. PS360 level is heavy CPU duty and faux HD
