But again I am surprised why people assume Nintendo "one-offs" in the console space can actually be extended into "trends". The only trend was that Nintendo's console business was shrinking for 23 years, with exception of one outlier.

The one outlier that showed that so long as Nintendo supports with games, sales happen. Coupled with the initial condition of NES, it holds together.

Maybe... but that "so long as" is an outlier condition for Nintendo :P.
It's not like they have reduced their R&D. Nintendo has increased their development expenditure every year. The Wii was a weak console and it's games looked shit but sold well. A unique phenomenon of cheap development and high profits. Now Nintendo has jumped to PS360 level, development cost and time has undoubtedly risen.
