Well, that's how Ken Kutaragi was treated so you have a point. Has Iwata really failed the hardest already though? Nintendo really hasn't lost that much and 3DS is doing very well. Wii U may still take off (see ps3) and will likely still sell decently. Isn't it a bit too early to go "off with his head"?

I don't know if it could realy take off. PS3 problem was price, it is something that you can solve easily. Mass production helps, improvements in CPU/GPU yelds and redesigns. I believe Wii U concept is flawed. In the end the tablet couldn't be used in any game changing experience (like Wiimote was in Wii Sports). Because of that, in the end it is just a clumsy controller. The hardware specs are a problem that can't be solved to. It's not about the graphics, its about it losing compatibility with games done for PS4 and One (Wii U uses a different shader model, you can't use GPGPU code from PC/PS4/One on it without redesigns), so it will lose a lot of support because of that. They did it following the Wii model, but that model doesn't work anymore. If it did, Wii sales wouldn't had dropped hard after 2011.
I think they didn't want to compete directly with Sony and MS anymore, they don't believe they can just go and do a console to fight the others and prefer to try disrupting things to enter new markets. Inovation is important when it is done because you believe it will change things for better, not just by the sake of it. Because of that, I believe Iwata should leave and be replaced by someone that takes them to the right direction that is competing for real with Sony and MS. With Wii U, they just ignored them and did what they wanted. So, it won't take off. When PS4 and One receives price cuts, it will bomb harder. Iwata must leave now before Nintendo starts developing their next machine or he will destroy it to.
About 3DS, it isn't doing that good. They didn't got a profit, probably because 3DS hardware isn't sold for much of a profit. It wouldn't be a problem, but its tie-ratio is a little more than 2 games per user, down from more than 5 on DS (that was sold to a profit).
