Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo lowers forecast from 55 billion yen profit to 25 billion yen loss

So... They projected that they were going to sell THAT many 3DS' to be sold in the fiscal year? 18 MILLION? Don't get me wrong, this year had some of the best ever 3DS releases (Pokemon, Zelda) but 18 million is ridiculously high, has any console ever sold that much in a year? They were predicting a new record or what? And this is comming from a guy that bought 3 limited edition 3DS' this year just because I could...

Wii U prediction was more reasonable at the time (in my opinion), I'm guessing these predictions were made early last year at the time when 'anything is possible!' and they expected the Wii U to pick up and start selling reasonably well, which didn't happen until the holidays rolled around...

Well as that's is a shipment figure for there financial year 1st April to 31st March.

They have done over 18 million in 4 years with the DS and over 17 million twice with the GBA and once with the DS also the Wii sold over 18 million in 3 years.

Dissapointing. They set their hopes too high in a moment when the market is not getting any stronger, with lower sales year after year and developers going bankrupt.

Still, with the 3ds selling so well, it´s really something to make anyone scratch his heads to think how they could have such losses, even with poor WiiU sales.

Now they can´t do much, they will have to deal with it and probably restructure the company for saving money.

I believe it´s better if we take a look on the official statements, rather than a short article

The DS had some monster years of 30+ million. Man Nintendo really had it made back then, Apple just had to screw it up with apps, lol.

That shows 3rd party are important, even if some fans think otherwise, nintendo cant make profit on home console without 3rd party

The real problem is the tablet control. It pushed away casuals.

More 3rd party isn't going to bring the masses to Wii U.

The entire PlayStation brand and its success is largely a result of Nintendos hardware stubborness and hostile attitude towards 3rd partys.

Ive never understood the 3rd partys mean nothing to Nintendo argument.

They don't mean anything.  They had alot of 3rd party's on SNES which only sold 40 million and Gamecube which only sold 22 million.  The Wii 's 3rd party games sold terribly except for Just Dance and a few others and Nintendo moved 100 million.  The DS didnt have very much 3rd Party support either and they sold 150 million.    Playstations entire model is different.   Without the 3rd parties they may not have even sold 30 million PS3's, and I wish I was exagerating.   Same goes for PS4 right now.  Killzone and Knack combined have sold 1.75 million / COD and Fifa combined have sold 2.92 million.   Flip to Wii U both Call of Dutys and Fifa combined have sold 490k / SM3DW has sold 1.63 million on its own.

Yes they do mean something. SNES sold closer to 50m and that was a time when the video game market was much smaller, it had well over 50% marketshare back then. And look at one of the biggest games on it, Street Fighter a 3rd party franchise sold over 12m on SNES. The Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy series each sold about 8m on SNES, Mortal Kombat did about 5m, the Disney games Aladdin+Lion King+Magical Quest sold 5m. Mega Man sold 2.5m, NBA Jam games sold 2.5m. 3rd parties helped SNES alot, especially in Japan where 12 of the top 20 best sellomg games were 3rd party.

How many of those though actually moved the consoles.   Super Mario World sold 20.6 million.  Super Mario All-Stars sold 10.6 million.  The DKC's combined sold 18 million.   Those are what moved most of the consoles.    The Genesis had most of those 3rd party games too (not Final Fantasy) but Nintendo killed them in terms of the 1st party games and that was that.   I have no doubt that 3rd party games can help Nintendo somewhat, but it will never be a big driving force.

As someone who actually was around during the SNES-Genesis days, third parties were huge.

The "must have" game for the SNES early on was actually Street Fighter II ... that was a huuuuuuuge deal, I remember it was sold out everywhere and SNES hardware sales boomed big time, retailers were ripping kids off charging $90 a cartridge at many places (and you guys complain about $60 games!).

Lol, I cant argue against Street Fighter II.   I think I have clocked 400 hours on SF4, its one of my favorite franchises ever.

The 9 million figure was always ridiculously unreachable.

On my block I remember we went from everyone having an NES, and two lucky kids having a SNES, to like triple the amount of kids with an SNES in about a month of SF2's release. It was definitely a must have system seller.

SNES honestly would've really pulled away from the Genesis well before DKC if Nintendo simply hadn't made the mistake of censoring Mortal Kombat. That really bailed the Genesis out.

So they lowered there Wii U Forcast to 2.8M for the year, does that mean VGC is overtracking, or do i not understand what the forecast means?

I wouldn't shed a tear if Iwata went, he's proven his incompetence time and again; what scares me is that his replacement might be some fuckhead who whores out Nintendo's games on smartphones and destroys their value and hardware business.

Well shit! I did not expect this.

I have to apologize to soundwave - Iwata needs to be removed from the top - maybe new management can ground them to reality

No apology needed. Honestly I'd rather have been wrong because I do genuinely like Nintendo, but they really did all this to themselves.

They need to become less stubborn and narrow minded.

Really had nothing do with them with wiiu besides lack of ads and naming. The third party made up there minds way before it was made. People saying "if it was so much powerful" don't realize that it never mattered before. The cost of current porting it much bigger now, so it was bound to happen. Most third party are happy with 2 systems and soon the same with apple.
