Forums - Gaming - Who will be the big losers this gen?

DarkTemplar said:
Unfortunately, third parties.

Year after year game development has been becoming more expensive while the market is not growing at the same rate.

We started to see the results last gen with many studios closing their doors and this gen things may get even worse if they did not decide to limit the budget of their games.

I do believe you´re right. This AAA high-development-cost paradigm is killing third-parties.

Not Nintendo. They'll sell the most first party software, Microsoft will sell the least hardware since Nintendo has the 3DS, and Sony has a 79% chance of going bankrupt in the next 2 years.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

Sony has double the equity of Nintendo, and growing.

Nintendo's profits are actually hanging by a thread.  3DS has good revenues, but who knows how long it will maintain this level.  Meanwhile Wii and DS are also still contributing a lot to their revenues.  As the Wii and DS fade away if the Wii U can't fill the void they will start losing cash big time.  Nothing will bankrupt Nintendo any time soon, but they could significantly scale back their position in game consoles.

It's all about the 1st party software sales.   Nintendo only sold 22 million Gamecubes but sold over 70 million is 1st party software.   Sony sold 80 million PS4's but only sold 95 million in 1st party software, not to mention that they made more games.      Sony makes nothing off of every PS4 sold, and Theif and Killzone combined have been outsold by SM3DW.  Trust me Sony would much rather be in Nintendo's position right now.  Playstation Now exists solely because Sony is desparate to make money off their software.

The easy ones are already taken, so I'll say Ubisoft.

No one.

PS4 will usher in a new golden age especially for 3rd parties, MS will do fine with the vcr approach. Ninty will get by as they always do.

m$, the xbox one is weaker, costs more and dont have better firstparty support(or buyed 3rd)

nintendo will be fine, they dont have to win the war to survive, even a 20m console will make a profit.

sony has other problems, i dont see em making profits anywhere. ps4 will not make profit this year, the costs will be higher if they aim for 16m this year. and they are making not so much profit with firstparty. an ps+ will be another problem, that will cost a lot more of people use it, the 3rd party developper will take more money if ps+ does well.
and if sony takes away the bigger games fom ps+ they will have problems with ps+ members..

nintendo will. but they will not know it because of the bubble they live in.

Nope, more third parties will be desperate for payments from PS+ and will agree to less than they get now, especially if their game didnt meet expectations on retail, and they have a greater chance of making money from DLC.

Those payments are fixed costs, but the increase from PS+ subscribers (because its compulsory to play online) will give them massive profits.

edit: just to add, im not saying this stop sony from posting losses.

i dont think teh payments for ps+ games are fixed costs, if it is we will see the gaming crash because of ps+. why should u make a 50million dollar game if u cant sell it because everybody knows it will be on ps+ soon.

the great games for free on ps+ are good for the consumers, but realy bad for the develloper. and tats in the long run not good or the gamer, they will try to get as more oney with less work, that cant work.

that could be a huge plus for nintendo, they dont screw u over with dlc(most of the times) and tehy have enough firstparty games in good quality

I can understand the argument, but I dont think PS+ will force developers into reducing their budgets. In terms of %, a small amount of games end up on PS+ compared to the ones that dont.
