Forums - Sony Discussion - As the domino's begin to fall....

blu-ray clearly won because of ps3. i don't see how anybody could even argue with that.

i believe online streaming will be much bigger than hi-def. this benefits both 360 and ps3, since both can stream movies from 3rd party. however, i also believe ps3 can benefit from its blu-ray player capability, and i think just enough to start consistently outselling the 360 in America by 2009.

the Wii is an epidemic.

One thing I never see people mention as a reason why people choose a console is also one of the biggest reasons why people choose the consoles they buy ... People often choose to buy a console because their friends or family own that console; this is one of the main reasons why a console that is selling at a rapid rate continues to sell at a rapid rate, regardless of what the other consoles do or have.

Price reductions, Blu-Ray and some big game releases will maintain the PS3's sales in the near future but it will eventually face the reality of being the third placed console. By the time Blu-Ray becomes a truely desireable feature for mainstream consumers Blu-Ray players will be (at least) $100 cheaper than a PS3, there will be more people who own Wii systems than the combined total of XBox 360 and PS3 owners, and many of the most anticipated games will be announced as Wii exclusive.

I'm surprised every day to see the Wii outsell the PS3 and XBox 360 combined, while being in short supply, and yet see people like finalsquall make claims like "I see domination for the ps3 and yes - will take down the wii eventually"

Clearly how? What statistics do you have to argue for that?

blu ray didnt completely win because of ps3, it was mostly due to movie makeers or w/e dropping hd dvd. blu ray cannot help the ps3 ship millions of consoles, as dvd helped the ps2 ship millions of consoles. dvd was something new, and it was a cd. people will continue to use dvd over blu ray and hd dvd, because most people dont give a hoot whether the movie they watch is in hi def. also hd tvs are very expensive these days.

Not to mention DVD was a lot more intuitive compared to VHS. Being easier to use was built into the system.

What do you have to do to enjoy the high definition of blu-ray, and HD-DVD? You need an HDTV, and the right cables, and the settings on the TV have to be set right. That is not intuitive.

Well its obviouse that it isn't at mass market yet and that reason would becuase

1. the HD tv ownership wasn't mass market, however sales of HDtv has made big jumps in sales over the last two christmas seasons.

2. the fact that there even was a Format War. if there was just one format this whole time then it would be alot easier to get customers to jump in and try out a new standard.

all in all the next few months sales will show if they can push into the mass market now that the war is over.

3. DVD hasn't worn out it's welcome yet.

This is not going to stop being a factor just because you all refuse to acknowledge it. HD-DVD was not holding high definition back.

LordTheNightKnight - You're a deluded little fanboy.

The PS3 IS the reason why Sony won the format war, HD-DVD was actually winning before the beast was unleashed, do some research.

HD-DVD came out a few months before any blu-ray films, and the library of blu-ray grew faster than HD-DVD did. Do some research.

And how is it being a fanboy to ague how blu-ray got this far, when I am not in any way denying THAT it has gotten this far?

Now try calling engadget a bunch of deluded fanboys. The are saying the same thing as I am, so go tell THEM they are wrong.

It's not just me claiming this. They're basically stating that sure the PS3 helped hold HD-DVD off, but the real reason is the much larger content. The PS3 had nothing to do with that.
