I find the whole point and angle of this thread a little confusing.

Firstly, Nintendo makes more money than the gaming divisions of Sony and Microsoft combined so they won't be going anywhere any time soon.

Secondly, as others have said, no gaming company or indeed gaming itself is THAT important and everything can and usually will be replaced eventually. In a hypothetical situation in which Nintendo went bankrupt (which will never happen on their cash reserves alone) then all of their employees would obviously find work elsewhere so their games would live on in other forms.

If you are trying to somehow objectively quantify the contribution and importance of gaming companies in the industry then it is very hard not to place Nintendo as number one by any metric that you choose. They have sold far more games than any other publisher, won more awards, dominate every "best ever" poll and are more financially successful than all other publishers by a long long way. Those are hard facts.

There aren't any other forms of entertainment I can think of that have been dominated so much by one company for so long. On that basis, I would personally say yes, they are THAT important.

Not to piggyback or anything, but this pretty much summed up my thoughts on the subject. Especially your 2nd point. I don't think any of the big gaming publishers are absolutely irreplacable, but that doesn't mean Nintendo isn't one of the most prominent.

Also, reading some of the comments here, there seems to be a lot of stereotyping the entire fandom by a vocal minority. Can we...not do that? Every fandom's got these, I don't know why only Nintendo warrants these types of comments.

Just wanted to clap that used stereotype instead of generalize. I hate when people misuse words.

On-topic if third party could get there games on apple products or any PC, why would they need Sony or Microsoft? Both would die a fast death. Ironically clouding gaming in 2-3 will be able to do this. On-live isn't even comparable to stuff were going to see than. I'm in college going for bs in cyber security and some of stuff were learning about cloud gaming/in general makes consoles look like dinosaurs.

What's stopping 3rd parties from doing that now? Won't it mean less royalty fees anyway?

So far on-live has tried it. Square Enix said there hoping to start by the end of 2014 or around 2015.

Most will follow as more companies have been talking about it.

Seriously.. what the fuck is the point of this topic? People that love Nintendo games are ALWAYS going to love Nintendo games, and people that despise them are always going to despise them. It's not like you're going to change someone's opinion with this topic. No one is going to suddenly read this and go, "shit.. you know what.. This topic has made me see the light! Nintendo games aren't as great as I thought! Therefore they AREN'T as important in the industry as I thought!" So basically, I only see this thread as flamebait.

Personally, from my 23+ years of gaming, Nintendo games for the most part, are about 100x better than the vast majority of video games I've experienced, and nothing is ever going to change my views on that. I WILL say that modern Nintendo is far inferior than retro Nintendo, but even modern Nintendo is still in a completely different league than most developers of the modern era.

Honestly would you say you are a ninty fanboy ?  yes or no, If yes then yahh this thread is a lost casue.  But some are more open minded, but may be ignorant of reality and still think as if ninty farts smell like roses.  People love for ninty should not blind them to the reality that to most gamers they are irrelevent.

Its not a thread to make you think less of ninty, but more of a get real it is what it is.  You may love ninty to death but most dont, so dont act like everyone needs to bow down and kiss their ass as if they are a holier then all part of gaming many ninty fanboys make em out to be.

I hope ninty get their shit together and gives my U 5 years of gaming, but my hope does not nor should it blind me to the state of things.

The point of this topic was to have a civil and reasonable discussion about Nintendo's role in the gaming industry, and whether some people are putting them on a pedastal.

Judging by your post, I'm guessing that isn't your preferred kind of topic, so feel free to find one that's a better fit for you.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

Not a single company, Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft play a staring role in the industry, people just have the opinion that their favorite company does.
Truth is that the second any bow out another company would move to fill the gap, because filling gaps in a market is where the money is to be found, and money is the entire reason for the industries existence.

The day any of the three bow out would be a sad day, but just like when atari, commodore, sega and many others left the hardware industry, the world kept spinning and the void was eventually filled, move on 5 years and some remember the companies with fondness, others with glee that they are gone, and that would be true for any company, even sony, microsoft or nintendo.

As for nintendo "making the best games", thats entirely down to opinion, average score or overall popularity does not mean universally true, we are individuals and unless you bow to the peer pressure of wanting to fit into a particular social grouping, you will like whatever game you truly like, even if every other person you meet thinks its the worst game ever made.

As such, who makes the best games?, everyone does, depending on who you ask.

If we are just talking about the big 3 hardware makers, Nintendo is easily the most irreplaceable. Sony and Microsoft are so similar that they could easily replace each other in the event one of them goes out of business. Third parties would pretty easy replace the content they make.

Who replaces Nintendo?

You should add " imo" after such insanity

That weren't called the "HD twins" for no reason.

Agreed. It's not even their incredibly similar libraries, their whole philosophy and approach to gaming is nigh identical.

Do you think it wouldnt have been the "hd triplets" had the wii enough power to port all the multi plats to or something?

Heres the thing, would anyone care if its replaced or not.

Ninty is irreplaceable only to a very small numbers of gamers, to most they are irrelevant.

I tend to think people would care about one of the biggest software publishers and only relevant player in the handheld space going away.

And how many would care if Microsoft or Sony went away?  Wouldn't most of those people just switch to the other and go on playing mostly the same games?

They were called the HD twins because they were both HD, and had similar third party offerings.  Sony's first party is way better than MS's. and in my opinion better than Nintendo at this point.  So I think Sony is harder to replace.

If the Wii still had motion controls, then no.
