Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony: 4.2M, VGChartz: 4.1M

The numbers are about right for PS4, maybe a little under, but not much.

The difference isn't that big.

Not hard to dominate japan when PS4 is not out there yet.

4.1M is rounded to nearest 100k, VGC number is acually ~4.13M, and while, given the demand, Sony is correct to consider all the shipped virtually sold through too, 70k is both acceptable as uncertainty, error or rough estimate of units still in the distribution channel. Wholesalers and big chains have their main warehouses, and they won't empty them instantly, as soon as a shipment arrives. Xmas week BTW was slower than the previous biggest ones, and the days immediately after Xmas (or after Boxing Day in some countries) surely are the main responsible for this minor slowdown, so less than 100k WW in the channel isn't excessive.
BTW, before the adjustment, VGC total for PS4 was a few tens k over 3.9M, less than 300k error, quite good in a frantic period like two console launches+BF+Xmas.

maybe the 100k is faulty return units...

b.t.w. why you didn't ask M$: 3M, VGChartz: 2.9M...

You can't be seriously serious?

Get over it.

Same reason the x1 is 2.9 and not atleast 3

NPD and VGC are the same, but the NPD has better sources to extrapolate from. The only real 100% accurate data is Sony's (and the others) shipped figures.

Anyway, 0.1m out is within the desired error. It's fine

You're right. NPD and VGC strive for the same goal....so why introduce a totally irrelevant figure into the mix?

The only thing that the shipped figure does is tell you your hard ceiling figure. It has some small relevance to retail sales, but there is potential for a massive buffer between the two...

Shipped tells you much more than that.  You see, only on rare occasions can a manufactorer stuff the channel.  Usually when a console first launches or when there is a new model and/or large price cut.  Other than that, retailers are not just going to except excess stock to fill up their warehouses.  So, for example, if VGC charts shows that there are 3M+ PS3s sitting on shelves (as it did before we had a large adjustment in '13), its quite reasonable for people to conclude that the console is undertracked.  I believe the standard supply is estimated to be 500K-1.5M, depending on the time of the year.

@ OP

A 100K difference isn't that big of a deal.  It's well within the 10% tolerance this site tries to mantain.

Don't Sony still only post shipped numbers and not actual retail sold numbers?

LOL not this again. Both ms, Nintendo and Sony use shipped as that is SOLD for them but in this case with ps4 selling out it is Sold through. Sony is NOT the only one who uses shipped normally.

nope! sony clearly said sell through when they announced the number. so its sold. but shipments will likely be 4.2 million because as you said, the PS4 was sold out.

3 days of the year missing.

Find it funny though, MS meant shipped to some when they said 3 mil. It's 100% sold through though when it comes to Sony. LOL!

Sony is pretty much sold out, Ms is not.....pretty easy to understand. Either way makes no diff, easy to see what is selling btter.

Lol? I didn't dispute any of the facts you just pointed out... But ok. Makes no "diff."
