Forums - Sony - Sony instigates competition among its own devices... again.

Obs 1: I´m not dishing the quality of any of the following products.

Obs 2: Sony´s case is not unique.

Obs 3: Diversity in some cases might be good for a companie.

Obs 4: I simplified much of my original post, it was a little complicated to follow.

So, do you want to stream old/nostalgic games?

You can buy a Bravia TV, or a PS4, or a PS3, or a Vita TV...

Want a entertainment hub?

You can buy a Bravia TV, or a PS4, or a PS3, or a Vita TV...

Want mobile games and entertainment?
Choose between a PS Vita or Xperia smartphone (that also stream games).
***************************************************
Bonus question: Does the PS4 output better image quality to a Bravia screen?

the main reason of this is to profit from software sales, not selling more devices. but also, lets use this logic, want to buy a new smart phone? what will it be, galaxy? iphone? nokia? the new xperia can play PS3 games, so thats a plus if you are a gamer.

want to buy a new TV? well the new bravia's will have PS now, thats a plus.

want to buy a PS4? great! if you want you can also stream PS3 games!

want to buy a PS Vita? .. lol sure, yeah right! dont worry we know you are kidding

Sony is a genius. They realized their TV division is doing shit so they said... On the gaming business software drives hardware. So let's put that software on our TV's! That will surely help to drive TV sales up. Merging Playstation with all their divisions... Genious.

Thank you for you post. They are all valid point. As I simplified my original post I will use other answers to clarify my analisys.

Imagine you have a PS3 (80mi people have) why would you buy a Bravia TV if you would have to re-buy/subscribe to play the games you like? Why not to buy a cheaper Samsung or LG screen?

If you have a Vita, why buy a Xperia, and vice versa.?

I think they're trying to promote unity(God I hate that word now) among all their devices.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

That would be smart and reduce a lot of expences with different divisions and strategies.... but I still think TV and Game division are separated.

They are but this could be the start of a "merger". I don't think it will be as good as it looks though. It depends on bandwith... Imagine playing one of your games and you lose connection... You won't be able to play the game right? I think it will get better with time though.

Maybe they are following Steve Jobs' market philosophy that intra-competition is of least concern.

Q1- Because the Bravia Tv has its own qualites. the PS3 streaming isnt the only thing it does. after all, if you want to buy a new TV, you are buying it based on what kind of Tv you want and in the price range you want, if the Bravia meets those qualifications, and you like it more than the others, you will buy it, even if you have a PS3. if you dont have a PS3 then the PS Now is just another feature added to the Bravia Tv's that might make you want to buy it more.

Q2- Because a Vita and a smartphone are very, very different things. a vita is a lexuary item, one that is obviously for a niche market. however smartphones are a necessity (well, mobile phones). everybody has them and everybody needs them. However just like the Tv's situation, the Xperia mobiles have many features of their own. if you want to buy a smartphone, you are most likely looking at the feature set now days, what it offers and what it does compared to the compitition. Xperia's and all other smartphones have a large feature set, and one feature most likely isnt a make a break for most consumers.

But you can see smartphone makers trying to add features to differentiate them selfs from other smartphone makers. and you can see sony adding the water proof to its phones to do just that, now its adding PS Now. if you are in the market to play PS3 games, you will buy a PS3. however, if you are in the market for a smartphone, know that the xperia ones do play PS3 games. if you bought them and dont really care, just know, you can play them anytime you want.

Take into consideration that Sony has sold more Xperia smartphone last quarter than they have sold Vita's in its lifetime.

Most electronics now days are not just a single use device, every device has a feature set. Mobiles do many many things, so do consoles, so do MP3 players (most are touch now days). By adding PS now you are adding a new cool feature to those devices, but as i said Sony want to make a profit from Software, so instead of having PS3 games on just PS3's, they will have it on laptops, Tv's,tablets, Vita's, PS4's and 10's of millions of smartphones they sell each quarter.

There are still 7 milliard people left in the world that still don't have a PS3. This is a bonus feature that will among other things separate SONY's products from competition and presumably entice some people to buy SONY's TV's.

PS4, PSV, Tablets and Smartphones cater to different "target groups". I don't understand your point to be honest since I have a Vita and I have a tablet and I have a smartphone... So why next time when I uprade my Tablet and Smartphone wouldn't buy SONY's products if service (or services) to which I'm alredy subscribed will carry over to other devices?

I don't really understand why should this cut into sales of consoles.
