Yes, if they can pull a VCS like trick, then things can be different. But they will have to advertise it massively, real massively.

So is "This" the Steam Machine or the Steam OS, because you suggested that I would just build my own using the Steam OS.

Prebuilt PC's aren't required either, but people buy them by the million.

Edit: Sorry for the back to back posting.

They can just go out and buy an actual gaming uptimized PCs for $100-$200 bucks more with similar or better specs and much more functionality, including the ability to run Steam Big Picture, which is pretty much all that Steambox offers.

Who out there would say - "hmm, I want to buy a gaming machine and spend 500 bucks. I want the one with less functionality and less games."

If it was $299 or less I'd understand the model and market for this but at 500 bucks it has no chance on the PC or console side IMO.

You do get a unique controller that almost makes it worthwhile in my eyes, but knowing Valve, they will make this controller available for Big Picture on the PC and if that is the case, there is no point to these devices at all.

270 = Radeon 7870 while GTX 760 = GTX 670 = Radeon 7950

Intel i3 however is several tiers above AMD A6 on the CPU side. They would be smarter to change the CPU to the Athlon X4 750k as its a quadcore and doesn't have a GPU built in which you won't need anyways since youre getting a R9 270 graphics card.

They are same price to boot.

More expensive than a pc with same performances and the same games.

More expensive than a console with probably same performances (Unique hardware).

I see no reason to buy it.

If this type of a console PC came out in 2009, it would have been a massive revolution. But today its just fighting for scraps really.

With consoles, PC gaming, crapload of Android devices fighting for your dollar with unique features, Online game streaming like Nvidia Grid and Gaikai, iOS devices and upcoming smart TV's with built in Android and PC streaming games...this just doesn't have much market to work with.

Well depends on how you define a "tier". AMD has no card between the Radeon 7870 and 7950 in performance. In fact I think they're within 15% of each other.

15% better performance out of a $200 price increase is not good system design in my world.

True but that CPU alone is going to bottleneck the R9 270 like crazy.

A6 is a dual core. AMD dual core ~= Intel single core

Yeah, true. I'm not familiar with the A6 family of CPUs but it sounds weak.

Anyway, when is Steam box released? We've been hearing about this thing for years but never seen in real life.

I'm still confused as to who this is for. Unless they make upgrading it REALLY easy, or get some exclusive content, I don't get the point of it.
