So it's not a complement to Direct X? It's either or? (just like it is with that other API that's been around forever and which Sony uses, forgot the name).

Can you elaborate on your last sentence? What happens if Nvidia decides to support Mantle?

It is a API to replace the Direct3D... not all the DirectX... so you need to use DirectX in the games for Windows but the graphic part instead to use Direct3D you will use Mantle.

But Mantle is just supported by AMD GCN GPUs (HD 7000, HD 8000 and the new Rx cards)... so developers will create the game in most cases using Direct3D and after that make a optimization patch using Mantle for these GCN GPUs.

Mantle is open so nVidia can implement the support for their GPUs but it won't happen... nVidia already have a API extension like Mantle for OpenGL... some games uses it already.

Okay, so it will replace the full Direct3D? So it's either Direct3D, OpenGL or Mantle for every specific game, not a combination of them?

Yeap.

But Mantle will be used for few AMD cards alone... so the game base will be created in Direct3D (or OpenGL) yet and some devs will give the option to Mantle if your card is compatible.

If you created a game only using Mantle you will restrict the game to less than 10% of the market (I don't have numbers but I guee way less than 10%).

Devs will be making games for DX + Mantle mainly, with some propably also working on OpenGL. AMD people can use every option, Nvidia people have to settle for DX/OpenGL.

The downside of mantle is that it adds more work for essentially half the customer base (AMD people only) atleast until Nvidia gets access to it (or if they even want to use it).

Cool, thanks for the explanations guys.

AMD is just beasting lately!

But any companies are already on board for this ?

I'm on the fence about a laptop with AMD A10 cpu, but if a game is CPU intensive there's no hope for me, no matter how good the gpu, unless that specific game supports mantle.

All EA games from now on will use Mantle then there's Oxide games, Cloud Imperium Games, Rebellion and Eidos

I recall Activision mentioning that they would also work on it and I supect Crytek will also considering CIG is making Star Citizen with Mantle API support. So including it on Crysis games will likely be easy.

Propably some others too, I havent really been following its development since early december.

AMD is doing great, even since they made those contracts for nextgen hardware. Let's hope Mantle will replace DirectX soon enough, it's holding game back.

I have a few questions regarding this. I have a pretty crappy laptop which I use for school it has a A10-5745 CPU with 8610g apu and a dedicated 8500m graphics card which run in crossfire and 8gb ram. Will I support mantle? Also will any game see a increase in performance or does the game have to be specifically coded and programmed with mantle in mind?

I love this company.

I'm a huge AMD fan. AMD XP 1600+, AMD Athon 64 3200+,  AMD X2 6000+, Radeon 9700, Radeon 1900XT and the Radeon 4850 HD are all in my history in the last decade of PC gaming. I am only AMD.

I'm so happy all 3 console manufacturers chose them and I will soon order a FX 8350 CPU together with a Radeon R9 290. With Mantle it's gonna be so sweet.
