Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo loses lawsuit, must pay 1.82% of 3DS wholesale price to Tomita Technologies LTD

Just dump their technology then. Not like the camera is some technological marvel.

Right?

Exactly, release a firmware update and lock the camera technology out. They wanted $4.5 for each unit sold, for that, Tomita is so greedy. $4.5 would be a lot.

What would be the point? You know they'd have to replace it with something that probably cost the same amount? This is what Nintendo should have been paying in the first place.

Maybe Nintendo will learn to make their own camera next time then. Maybe a good one too.

And yes I do know they'll just partner up with someone.

So did Nintendo steal this technology?

Not really.  Just like the saying there is an app for that, you could also say there is a patent for that.  Companies just file patents like crazy these days, hoping one of the big tech companies will develop something simlar to it, so that they can charge a license fee or sue them for infringement.

If I recall this case correctly, Tomita accussed Nintendo of stealing this tech when offering to use in 3DS development. During this period, numerous companies offered similarly technologies to Nintendo. I didn't really think Tomita had the strongest case though since at least one court sided with Nintendo I believe but i guess Tomita successfully appealed to another court

Right?

Too many games utilize the cameras, especially for AR cards. Kid Icarus. Bravely Default. Face Raiders and Spirit Camera would be kaput (not that anyone would complain).

Anyway, this has happened before. Is Nintendo allowed to appeal again?

The 3D camera is useless anyways. What the hell is the point of it? Those AR games that no one played for more than 5 minutes?

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Damn... that is a shit ton of money... 1.82% of 3DS wholesale price as a royalty? Damnnn!!!

A couple of bucks for each device sold...

Which is a lot of money for doing virtually nothing since its a royalty, and I am guessing its for all future 3ds as well... Its not a big loss for Nintendo or anything but its a big gain for that company...

Doing nothing? They developed the tech and Nintendo took it without paying.

Yea but they are not manufacturing the Camera or anything like that... Yea there are R&D Costs and patent but apart from that... they can basically just sit back and get a royalty from Nintendo. I am not saying they don't have the right to have the royalty, I am just saying that there isn't any future cost involved to have this royalty
