Forums - Sales - Wii U will have no problem outselling GC

I know that the whole Wii U VS GC thing has been done over & over again but I just went into depth calculating different sales and it seems Wii U will have no trouble outselling the GC. People seem to think that just because the GC is currently tracking higher that it will stay that way. Yet, looking at the sales, the GC sold horribly during its later years. let us take a look:

  • FY 2002: 3.8 Million
  • FY 2003: 5.7 Million
  • FY 2004: 5 Million
  • FY 2005: 3.9 Million
  • FY 2006: 2.3 Million
  • FY 2007: 730K
  • FY 2008: 160K

The Wii U sold 2.8 Million in 2013 with no big sellers besides for Super Mario 3D World & a remake of Zelda TWW. The year still has 2 weeks left too. It has surpassed the GC sales from 2005 with no games and a $300 price tag. The GC was $100 that year and still sold less with its library of games.

Doing the math, the GC sold 4.4 Million consoles a year on average. The Wii U sold 3.9 Million in its first full year on the market which ended before 3D World even launched.

Many Wii U defenders believe that the Wii U is too expensive and that plays a big role in why the Wii U isn't selling well. I disagree. Adjusting for inflation, the Wii U is around the same price as the launch N64 & GC price. It also has bundled games making the value even better depending on how you look at it. With that said, the price being $300 does give more room for future price cuts that the GC didn't have. The GC was already $150 at this point leaving little room for more price cuts later on.

Games sell systems. This was true even for the GC which had a much better library of games within its first year. Wii U will eventually have a library to at least GC standards. (Hopefully)

Another advantage is Japan. Nintendo has increased its brand there since the GC launch. The Wii U should easily surpass the 4 Million sold that the GC did there. Also, you have the new Wii gamers. I'm betting that at least some of them return and buy a Wii U.

Lastly, you have the mystery projects. Nintendo now knows what the power of a new idea can do. I'm confident that they are working on a "Wii Fit" to be revealed soon. The question is, will it work? Miyamoto also has a new IP in development, if it is more mainstream than Pikmin, maybe it could be a killer app?

Anyway, that's my view on it. Feel free to disagree if you...disagree.

A lot of people seems to forget that the GC practicly launched with Super Smash Bros Melee.

I think it will as long as Nintendo keeps supporting it and doesn't pull any surprises that would kill it (like the Wii 2 releasing in a few years). They also need to get out a new Metroid and Star Fox. Although these aren't massive system sellers, they appeal to plenty of Nintendo fans.

The counter argument would be that Wii U had NSMBU.

In its first full year though the GC had a much better library overall. One game won't make a system sell like crazy unless it is completely new and catches fire. (Halo, Wii Sports)

I look at NSMB as a game you get when you have the system, not as a game you get a system for. SSB is both. But that might just be me though.

I agree, plus there's the fact that Smash games are one per generation, which builds demand, and you had already had a NSMB arrive on the 3DS just months before the Wii U game.

Watch out, I get called a Nintendo troll when I say this, despite sales backing it up.

I personally believe every big game holds a certain weight and once you have enough reasons for your personal tastes you'll pick it up.

this varies by person but you make a valid point. NSMB is a game that holds a bit of weight for a ton of people but isn't going to tip the scale for many. SSB on the other hand, is a scale tipper.

That is incorrect. NSMB is a system seller and an even bigger one than smash bros.

If you say so.

^I would say it is. I mean, Nintendo are bundling it with WiiU's for a reason.

I think more people are willing to pay $300 for Smash Bros than NSMB. Either way, Wii U has less than what GC had which is the point of the thread.
