While TLOU wasn't anything special gameplay-wise, the story and presentation ( specially story) were simply breath-taking. One of the best, if not the best ever in a video game.

I don't know why some people say that, it had amazing melee combat, crafting, scavenging and top notch 3rd person shooting. I have never played a game with as good melee combat as TLOU.

It is just my opinion. I  don't think the 3rd person shooting was THAT amazing.

What was wrong with the shooting mechanics?

Every gun felt real and every bullet had a punch to it. The only thing that annoyed me were armoured bullet sponges.

There was nothing wrong with them. They were simply nothing special or revolutionary. That's all I was saying.

The tension, the communication between your friendly AI and yourself as well as the enemies communicating between themselves. Ellie calling out people, throwing bricks, jumping on peoples backs and stabbing them. Her commenting on what you've done. The melee combat and its contextual focus is so insanely raw, powerful and satisfying/terrifying at the same time. The AI flanking you and really behaving powerful. The lack of ammo and supplies, the decision of going stealth, evading alltogether or killing to survive. The dynamic of all of this as you can go from whatever to another approach by simply hiding again. The variety of what tools you got at hand. The decisions on what to craft: Molotov or health pack? The game gains a lot if you play it on Hard & Survival with listen mode turn off (its automatically turned off in Survival). The moments when shit hits the fan are remarkable and allow for gameplay segments that constantly are different and surprise you leaving for a lot of room to have fun and experiment.

There really isn't much shooting going on if you play on Hard / Survival, as well. Not to mention that every bullet sending you backwards was something more games could use and the elimination of bullet sponges most of the time (armor dudes aside).

And let's not forget that the gameplay also includes those small and slow moments. Every press triangle to hear additional conversatons as a reward for scavenging and exploring is brilliant. The joke book entries in particular.

Check this out and realize just how amazing the gameplay is for some people (like myself):

No video game has ever changed my life and I doubt any video game ever will, it's just entertainment after all. It's not suppose to be integrated into your real life.

Fair enough. But the video highlights how, for the guy making the vid: Ellie and Joels relationship started to have him second guess his decision of not having any children.
