How has Vita software fared compared to the PSP?

Great! 64 30.92%

Good all things considered 62 29.95%

OK but not too good 43 20.77%

Bad 17 8.21%

Terrible 19 9.18%

Total:205

Assassin's Creed

First we'll start off with the Assassin's Creed series. Suprisingly, looking at the graph shows that the Vita's iteration of the series is actually keeping up with the PSP's and was, for awhile, tracking ahead. Now this is most likely because of the bundle Liberation had when it launched but since I don't believe we have figures on how many bundles were sold I'd say the Vita version has fared well compared to the PSP version. Also due to the holiday season Liberation looks to take back the lead as you can see by it's upward trend in the graph.

  • Liberation Lifetime sales - 800,577 (~58 Weeks)
  • Bloodlines Lifetime Sales - 1,114,565 (~210 weeks)

Need For Speed

Next up we have the Need For Speed series. Now Most Wanted 5-1-0 isn't the first NFS on the PSP but I felt that it was a better comparison since they both are under the "Most Wanted" banner and released at a similar time in each console's lifetime. The graph shows that the PSP version has out-paced the Vita version by a considerable margin. However both have enjoyed good legs and it has yet to been seen if the Vita version can maintain it's sales. One thing I find interesting is that both seem to have gotten off to a slow start and in 5-1-0's case it's legs have nearly carried it to the 2 million sold mark. It will be interesting to see if the Vita version will see similar legs throughout it's life.

  • Most Wanted Vita Lifetime Sales - 467,274 (~ 58 weeks)
  • Most Wanted 5-1-0 Lifetime Sales - 1,949,439 (~407 weeks)

Call of Duty

Now let's take a look at Call of Duty. The graph clearly shows that Declassified massively outpaced Roads to Victory during the first 35 weeks or so but again like Assassin's Creed this can be attributed to the hardware bundle. However, the PSP version has since been catching up with Declassified and looks to overtake the it by say week 80. I think it goes without saying the the legs on the Vita version won't be very good due to the game's poor reception and small Vita install base. I myself still believe Declassified will coast past the million mark despite those two setbacks. What will be interesting to see is who will be the first to pass one million sold, Assassin's Creed Liberation or Declassified.

  • Declassified Lifetime Sales - 823,101 (~55 weeks)
  • Roads to Victory Lifetime Sales -  2,079,572 (~ 351 weeks)

Persona

Ahh my favorite comparison, Persona 3 Portable vs. Persona 4 Golden. Just have a look at that graph. I think it goes without saying that Persona 4 Golden's sales have been very impressive. From week 1 P4G has outpaced P3P and is not looking back. Looking at the graph shows that when each had only been released in Japan their sales were actually pretty close but when P4G released in the west it's sales skyrocketed and show little signs of slowing down. This holiday is proving to be very good in P4G's case as you can see by the steep upward trend. In my opinion there are three reasons why Persona 4 Golden has had such excellent sales compared to Persona 3 Portable.

1. Persona 4 is more popular than Persona 3. 2. Persona as a series is more popular now than when P3P was released. and 3. Persona 4 Golden is a system seller/must have game due to coming out earlier in it's respective console's lifetime (and just being a flat out fantastic game). Also with the announcement from Atlus last month that P4G has reached 700k units shipped (including digital) we can speculate that currently the game sits at ~750k  since at the time VGC showed P4G at 500k. What will be fun to watch is if P4G can hit 1 million sold by the time Persona 5 launches and become the first Persona game to reach that goal.

  • Persona 4 Golden Lifetime Sales - 541,074 (~79 weeks)
  • Persona 3 Portable Lifetime Sales -571,148 (~215 weeks)

Killzone

OK next up we have the Killzone series. Despite being quite early in Killzone: Mercenary's life we can see that it is currently tracking behind KZ: Liberation by ~50k. However you can see that Liberation's sales begin to taper off somewhat from here on out so we may see Mercenary pass it or at least close the gap in the next year. Now I should note that Right now it's of course the holidays so Mercenary's higher sale are too be expected. I feel that as long as the Vita stays at least a little bit relevant for a good portion of the 8th generation we may see KZ:M pass KZ:L lifetime sales total or be within about 100k.

  • Killzone Mercenary Lifetime Sales - 213,439 (14 Weeks)
  • Killzone Liberation Lifetime Sales - 839,474 (~370 weeks)

LittleBigPlanet

Finally let's look at how LittleBigPlanet fared on each console. I think it's pretty clear that LBP PSP is destroying LBPV at the moment too the point that the Vita version won't be able to even come close to it's older brother. The PSP version crossed the 500k mark very early in it's life compared the the Vita iteration which took over a year to hit the mark. Looking at the graph shows that  a giant rift opened up between each's sales at the same point in their lives that propelled LBP PSP past the 1.5m mark. Honestly LBP Vita will be lucky to hit 1.5m lifetime but 1m may be possible.

  • LittleBigPlanet Vita Lifetime Sales - 537,349 (~63 weeks)
  • LittleBigPlanet PSP Lifetime Sales - 2,352,866 (~212 Weeks)

Also as a little disclaimer, none of the graphs have digital sales (duh) so actual sales may defer, especially in the Vita's case and those "week" numbers are most likely wrong since I'm to lazy too actually do the math. Oh and please excuse any misspelling since my keyboard likes to suck.

Interesting stuff. Honestly, though, I think the software sales for the Vita are pretty darn good considering the size of the installed base.

As for digital sales, didn't Ubisoft say it was something like 15% for Liberation on the Vita? I remember it was high.

Considering the install base psv software are not really bad compared to psp except lbp

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Thats not to bad in the vitas case at all.

I don't remember them stating digital sales but if %15 is true then thats awesome. Would put Liberation at 920k.

I agree with Pokoko, all things considered it's sales aren't bad. Still amusingly awful compared to the 3DS :P

Turns out I was wrong after all.  They weren't talking about Liberation, just in general.

"Q: You said 16% of FC3 sales came from Digital. 16% of overall or PC?
A: Overall. Might be interesting for you that going forward (this can change), on average, on new release products about 6-7% of sales will be digital, up from <2%. Interesting reference, of course each game might change. We know it will continue to grow. Back catalogue, digital distribution is getting closer to 50%. 6-7% is more for new releases.

---------

Q: Vita Digital Downloads?
A: 15-20%, more important in US than EU."

PSP got  owned pretty badly  by Vita regarding Persona.

Ah ok. I remember them saying Liberation was at 600k a while back. I really wish developers would just give out digital numbers.
