The kinect essentially meets every criteria that would be considered a fad.

Microsoft tried to make the Kinect the new Wii but failed for these reasons:

a) It was too expensive. The Wii was $250, the Xbox 360 with Kinect was like $400 back then
b) The Wii already got most of that audience, the Kinect was not much different
c) The Kinect DID get a big chunk of that audience, however, but because it was aimed at the casual audience we got games to try and appeal to them, rather than hardcore gamers
d) Microsoft barely supported it. Nintendo supported the Wii with tons of great games, including heavy hitters like Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, and Metroid. Also, Nintendo kept the casual audiences coming back with Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Party, Wii Play, etc. etc. Microsoft had a big launch and just quit after that.
e) Kinect never got its killer app. It never got its Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Mario Kart, etc. etc.

Microsoft needs to support the Kinect more, and get more heavy hitters for it. Delaying Kinect Sports Rivals was a huge mistake. The Kinect needs at least 2 AAA games by the end of 2014 to justify it for hardcore gamers, and for casuals, it needs a SUPER hit like Wii Play or Wii Fit.

Maybe get Shenmue 3 for Kinect or something like that. It needs a huge hit that makes Kinect necessary.

Obviously. From fastest selling product to bundled with every Xbox one. There is no need to further discuss it.

The Xbox One just launched and every one of them comes with the Kinect, which MS built the entire experience around.

LOL @ fad.

I think what happened is Kinect took off at first with the 360, so they decided right away to focus on it with the Xbox One. Then by the time the console was being prepped for finalization, kinect fizzled like the Wii did. But it was too late, so they had to just hope it would work...

Was a fad. General consumers couldn't give 2 shits about it.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

I found this an interesting input. Skip to 3:30 if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

My 8th gen collection

LOL @ the Poll. A fad that lasts 10 years? Really?

It will never be separate. Stop with this.

After 4 weeks, I actually realised yesterday I no longer navigate menus on consoles with controller at all anymore. I no longer sign in with controller anymore. I no longer use controllers for uch anything other than playing a game.

Is it a fad, not in my house. It would actually feel dated without it now.

Hey the other fanboys lost the graphics edge, they have to pick on something.
