Does everybody on Vgchartz really agree that the console with the most sold units in its entire lifetime automatically becomes the winner of that generation? That's a load of bullshit if you ask me!

Depends what you describe the 'winner' as I guess, it's already very muddy waters. Right now the only basis of Wii winning is that it sold the most hardware. If in the end PS3 jumps ahead, how can you claim Wii won anything? Because it sold more in a certain time frame?

Possibly yes.

What if the PS3 surpasses the wii in the year 2020 or beyond (using an extreme example here) how relevant is that to "winning the 7th(?) console generation"? When most of the sales you needed to catch up to the wii occured well after the next gen happend? What if in future generations we have even more extremes happen...are we just going to say well you know PS6 sold more than the WiiME 50 years later...it obviously won that generation. Seems a bit silly to me.

Personally i think in some generations we have clear winners and in others we dont. Last gen is one of those tricky ones where all three consoles "won" in some way.

If we look at the lifetime of the generation, the Wii won that. If we look at the lifetime of the consoles..then the PS3 has a possibility of winning that. If we look at profits then either Wii or 360 won that. Theres just so many factors that come into play here. I dont think a blanket definition like "most units sold EVER of all time" sufficiently covers the question of winner of the generation. Not necessarily saying i have the best definition...but thats my take on it.

For me, it's just difficult to consider Wii the winner of the generation when it finished so bad that generation (5'2 million in 2012, 1'7 million until now in 2013) when PS3 has been outselling Wii since 2011.

How the winner of the generation can be the only console nobody wanted to buy just before the next gen started??? For me that's a pyrrhic victory.....

Honestly, it may be possible but neither of those battles are easy to speak of (PS3xWii; PS4xGen).
Some points i thought of

1- CONCURRENT BATTLES
I think that those two things can hurt each other. People that acquire a new PS3 now, will wait some time until they buy their PS4, that will give MS some ground to build on.
or
PS4 sales will hurt PS3 legs against Wii. PS3 by the way is 110 mil behind in software sales, new PS3 owners are more likely to purchase used games, therefore i don't see softwares sales getting close.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2- JAPAN
You guys are giving japan leadership too much credit. Home consoles are losing power there.
3DS with less than 3 years already outsould PS3+Xbox together. DS outsold PS3+x360+wii.

If Xbox can make a US leadership, that does compensates for not having japan.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3-TOO EARLY
Xbox sold extremelly well too.

Games wise, rising can be boring, but knack is just a bad game.
In march we are going to see second son duel against the overhyped titanfall. While titanfall will be divided on 3 plataforms (PC, Xbox360, XONE), i just don't know how that will impact.

-----

Don't look to me that way, i want PS4 to win this.

No, they won two generations and Nintendo won three as it stands today. You can't ignore consoles before Sony, unless you're a fan boy. But they have sold more home consoles overall, which is impressive given that Nintendo was around longer.

Nintendo may have won three gens, but the SNES didn't pull ahead of the Genesis until 1994 when Sega was shifting towards their next system.

And that is easily explained by the fact that the Sega Genesis was released 2 years earlier than the SNES...

It's completely different from a hypothetical scenario of PS3 outselling Wii.

Not so different in fact

As different as it can be. Genesis had a 2 year head-start over SNES, and despite of that, SNES outsold it (by at least 9 million lifetime), before the Saturn was out there (end of 1994, same as PS1, a year and a half before N64). On the other hand, PS3 and Wii were released at the same time (360 a year before), WiiU is already one year old, and now PS4/Xbox One are already out.

If PS3 outsells Wii in a few years, it would be well into the 8th gen, with a discontinued Wii and the entire industry focused on the new platforms for years now, including Sony and Nintendo themselves. A rather hollow "victory", if you can even call it that.

I love how obsessed sony fans are with "WINNING!!!" everything. It's like their games just aren't that fun so they must find another way to enjoy their Sony fandom.. By constantly gloating about how much "THEY WIN!" even though Sony's success has absolutely nothing to do with them personally (and even when they sell the most they usually lose millions in the process). So.. yea.. GO SONY!

^ This is so true lol... They forget that the console makers' (large corporations) first goal is to make a profit and to satisfy shareholders rather than be championed by silly fanboys in terms of who reached so many millions first. Fanboys need to take up a hobby or a sport to release all that emotion and energy pent up inside. Still very entertaining to read though!!!

PS2 shipped 117 million consoles until March 31 2007 according to official numbers by Sony, so basically sold 40 million more alongside PS3. Obviously PS3 is not PS2, but doesn't need to be. If Wii stops selling and ends with 101-102 million lifetime and PS3 finish 2013 around 82-83 million, it needs 20 million more or less to beat Wii. I think Ps3 will last until end 2018, that's an average of 4 million each year.

It will be close and difficult but PS3 CAN overtake Wii.

And taking 12 years to sell the same amount of consoles that Nintendo sold in ~5 years is truly triumphant...

Judging from this thread, it seems Sony is the 'disputable' winner in home console sales.

Units sold are units sold....

But easy..., I'm not saying PS3 won anything, i was just explaining how ps3 can overtake wii sales.

I'm sorry.  I quoted you because you did a good job laying out the numbers, but really I intended for my comment to be directed at everyone in general.  I agree that the ps3 might overtake the Wii in a few years, but taking twice as long to reach the same sales does not make Sony the 'Undisputable' winner.

I apologize if my comment came off as sharp.  I didn't intend for it to be that way.

if it happens, ps3 will take 7th and 8th gen to win the 7th gen....

Nintendo: Total sales across all releases (Handheld + Home) = 665.72 Average = 66.57 (10 Consoles) Highest Seller: NDS 154.88
Sony: Total sales across all releases (Handheld + Home) = 432.68 Average = 72.11 (6 Consoles) Highest Seller: PS2 157.68
Microsoft: Total sales across all releases (Home only) = 106.47 Average = 35.49 (3 Consoles) Highest Seller: 360 79.98
SEGA: Total sales across all releases (Handheld + Home) = 70.18 Average = 14.04 (5 Consoles) Highest Seller: GEN 29.54

[Units all in millions]

There, this is the fairest way to do it. Sony has better sales on average and holds the crown for highest selling console, but Nintendo still holds the crown for most units sold overall. I also wanted to add in SEGA to show people that Nintendo are no where near the appalling shape SEGA was in and thus don't expect them to go the way of SEGA.

Sony holds the record for most home consoles sold.

If we are talking about profits then isn't MS the winner this Gen? Aren't they the ONLY company currently making a profit at the end of every year? Or am I mistaken? Not sure that's why i am asking.

If we're talking about profits then I think Nintendo pretty handily won every generation.

Well if my experience at Wal Mart last night was any indication, things are looking better for PS4. All PS4's were out, and there were 5 XBox Ones sitting there. I came back after shopping and they were still there. That extra $100 matters, and I think MS needs a price cut if they want to win this generation (and even then it still may not happen).
