Forums - Nintendo - Mario Kart 8: Items are held instead of dragged behind you now? Dafuq!? <(o_O<)

Do you think this is a good idea?

Heck yeah!!! 80 64.52%

Naw mawn... 38 30.65%

Total:118

I'm just speculating here, but maybe it's somewhat to nerf the would be advantage the Gamepad player would have with the aid of a second screen?

Gonna watch the trailer now...

Wasn't that also the case in Double Dash!!? I don't remember ever dragging items behind me in that game, so red shells had to be blocked by dropping the item at the right time.

I have no idea, but since Double Dash didn't have online, no one would have cared. :L

Great rebuttal...

But seriously, all that changes is that you don't have to hold down an additional button for what can feel like an eternity, and it removes the risk of getting screwed over by another driver who cuts in front of you and only accidently hits you with an item that they drag behind them.

Double Dash!! had a red shell icon popping up behind you to alert you that you are about to get hit, so if MK8 uses the same item mechanic, it should have that icon as well. *EDIT: There were no banana packages in DD!!, and triple shells were juggled by Koopa and Paratroopa instead of circling around the karts.*

You still have to hold it down to have 2 items at once, and that last part is like saying people with Starman only accidentally kill you.
I definitely try to cut people off like that all day, aswell as watch out for people trying to do the same to me. Unsportsmanlike driving ftw!

Iirc MK8 does have the Red Shell alert, so I supose it'll just take practice to get the timing down, though this still isn't as effective a method for dealing with Reds, but ahwells I'll live. Still don't like this change tho!

Okay just saw it, that does seem like an unnecessary animation...

I suspect a Double Dash mode.

Surprised nobody mentioned the new type of kart o.O

We have Karts/Bikes/(3 wheeled karts)

I thought it was just another Kart body. Your post even agrees with this lol.

If it were up to me, I'd be making no such assumption. I'm not trying to get anyone's hopes up or anything lol.

"...vehicles include UFOs, four-wheel ATV buggies, standard karts and bikes."

I think the 3 wheeled kart you saw was just a standard kart or bike skin. Still, "UFO's"!

Yeah, it's a Double Dash mechanic, and i don't recall red-shell blocking being too hard in that game (now in damn Kart DS, where they made it that the red shells would try to aim for the side of your kart, ooohhh...)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Bumping this back up due to some ideas that were brought up in GameXplains latest analysis video, in which they finally caught the most noteworthy detail from the new trailer.
Here's a link a video if ya haven't seen it yourself:

So if it's true that you can only hold one item at a time, and that all items come in singular forms, then I'd be perfectly fine with items no longer being dragged behind ya! With those changes, the Red Shell is much less OP, as it's impossible to fire 2 of em one right after another to guarantee a hit even if they've got an item, and of course no triple Red Shells! Infact it further balances items in general as you'll have to put more thought into em since you only get one use. Of course, this isn't confirmed 100% yet. Sure no triplets of any item was shown in the latest trailer, but we also have yet to see the Bullet Bill, the Starman, and of course the Blue Shell, all of which are guaranteed to be in this game. I bet the next trailer will confirm things one way or the other!

Isn't holding the items better?
