When the PS3 launched they had everything against them and still managed to turn it around, now with the PS4 they have everything going for them there is almost no way for them not to do good this gen.

Even if PS4 is the fastest selling console in history, it doesn't make sense to ingore how financially unsuccessful the PS3 was and pretend it was a huge financial success because it sold 80 million. I can understand why the "journalist" do it though. Since It's mostly used in negative Nintendo articles, Nintendo fanboys will keep going back to the website to see if they put up more negative Nintendo articles. It's sort of like what YouTube trolls do to get views.

The only people who care about how "financially successful" a console is are stock holders and excuse makers. Everyone else cares about total units sold. Right or wrong, it's how this whole thing works.

What do you see on the front page of vgchartz? A graph showing which is making the most revenue? Or a graph showing which consoles sold the most units?

They have a graph showing hardware sales because It's a sales website.

....and because that's what people actually CARE about.

not only people, but game devs and publishers as they are the ones putting games on systems and care about how much consoles are actually out their and not how much money they make

LOL

Sonys gaming division is still in massive trouble and the reason is just the sheer number of flops in terms of software with the PS3 & Vita.

1st Party Games under 2 million sold - R&C a Crack in time, Infamous 2,Heavenly Sword, God of War Ascention, Resistance 3, MAG, Motorstorm PR, Socom, Hot Shots Golf, R&C All for One, Modnation Racers, a bunch of MLB games,Twisted Metal,Playstation All-Stars,LBP Karting,Lair,Sly Cooper,Starhawk, and atleast 10 casual aimed games. The Vita has sold only 4.7 million units of 1st party software total (Nintendo is well over 63 million on 3DS).

Considering that there is either a small loss or profit on all consoles, the number of consoles sold really is a bad measure for success. Everyone calls the Gamecube a massive failure, yet since Nintendo moved 65 million 1st party games, they actually managed to turn a decent profit. Even Sony's biggest title (Uncharted) only sold 6 million each, which is really good but is the same number that DKCR sold last on Wii, yet no one considers DK to be a huge franchise.

Everyone compares Nintendo to Sega, but the reality is that Sony is much closer to Segas situation right now. Genesis (PS3) sold a bunch of consoles but the 1st party software did terribly (Super Mario World almost outsold all Genesis 1st party software combined). The Gamegear (Vita) was a failed attempt at a handheld and hurt Sega Financially. Saturn/Dreamcast continued to have terrible 1st party software sales and then the console division folded. The only difference now is that 3rd Party software is keeping Sony alive, and thats primarily just Call of Duty, GTA, and FIFA.

Thats a bad joke right.  Do you not see how many games now are either rooted in microtransactions, locked but on disc DLC, or just are unfinished profucts (Battlefield 4).   The number of studios/companys out there that consistantly put out quality and only have a bad one now and then is tiny.  Rockstar,Nintendo,Naughty Dog,Bethesda,2K, and even most of them have had their quality waver in recent years.  Money is everything...the end.

Absolute quality post and bang on the money.

Funny how all this gets completely ignored by gaming 'journalist'.

youve literally missed my entire point and what you said had nothing to do with what im saying. The more a console sells, more the support it will get, period. Whether that be SOny and they loose money on every console sold or whatever is not relevant as it does not effect the support it gets, which as gamers i would have thought that was the most important thing.  Your statement is best saved for another subject entirely.

Whenever I see articles about how the Wii U is doomed, lots of the writers talk about Sony like they never loose money and are perfect. It's like they're completely ignoring how much money the PS3 lost. Does anyone here know why people do this?

This post is funny. Its becoz the PS3 loss has been discussed to death since 2006. WiiU is a new console. No one is ignoring the PS3 losses, you just werent there when people discussed it.

Its relevant when the parent company goes belly up and can no longer support the platform, which is the exact direction Sony is headed.
