Forums - Microsoft - Jonathan Blow: Microsoft have a cultural habit of treating small developers like s**t

Well know developer Jonathan Blow who is behind super hit games like Braid and the upcoming The Witness is well known for his outrage against Microsoft and their indie policies. A few months back Jonathan Blow had criticized Microsoft’s claim of increasing servers to 300,000 and stated it was a lie.

Twitter user asked Jonathan whether he ever apologized for being wrong since they do have actual servers, to which he replied: “Well, they said they are Azure servers, and Azure servers do exist physically. Nobody disputes that…”

He further revealed that why he does not give Microsoft the benefit of doubt: “They threatened to ruin my life, and I am not the only indie they treated this way. So I do not give them the benefit of the doubt. Actually some other indies (like Team Meat) got treated way worse than I did.”

He further stated that it is Microsoft’s habit of treating indie developers badly.

“They have a cultural habit of treating small developers like shit. Hopefully they will manage to get away from this on the new console, but I have reason to be skeptical, as many of the people who treated devs badly still work there.”

He also justified his public outrage against Microsoft stating that if he sees an injustice, he will speak out about it.

As usual, bold words indeed. It makes us wonder whether Jonathan Blow will ever release a game on Xbox One or Microsoft’s future products.

I feel like I read this story already... many times before.

If MS is treating developers that poor, they'll lose support. The end.

Lol how did they treat him and other indies like shit?

Something definitely happened that made him extremely pissed with MS and he has every right to be wary of them, yet I feel MS might have identified the problem (in policies or attitude) they had in dealing with indies and made real strifes to improve, even though it mostly is still the same people handling this side of the business.

If I'm wrong about that then it will show in consistently lower support for their platform, but I expect most of the indies to be able to do good business with all of the console manufacturers.

That's what MS is doing for more than 3 decades with their competitors and 'friends'.
I guess it is because all the guys who developed the original xbox left and were replaced by ms employees with windows-mentality.
Considering all the previous ideas they developed(before the 180) their arrogance and ignorance towards their "peasants" were obvious.

On the other side:i'd really like to know what happened to "team meat" to get a more objective point of view+
he should stop with this accusations for a while as it seems MS changed the rules in favour to indie-developers.
Let's see how good/bad this changes really are.

why on earth should he stop if his and other devs complaints are the ones who got MS to change the rules?

Serious question?

I just get a feeling that we have some famous indie developers out there that are just cry babies, and get angry whenever MS doesn´t do what they say. I have seen very few examples of MS treating them like shit, they seem to rather want to invest on them quite alot.

The parity they force on everybody? If my game came out on PS4 first and later I decide to port it to xbone, they will not be accepting it on their system, its surreal.

Developers don't want to lose more than 40% of the income.
