winner is 3DS obviously

could be overtracked? but by how much? still a winner, well deserved

from home consoles, XboxONE clearly, for maintaing good number after launch week (even at that price), then WiiU for the high increase despite low sales all the year, also 360 and Ps3 O_O

it's cool that the gaming industry is so healthy despite the lame tablets and facebook games taking over :S

facebook games is starting to fizzle down.... other than candy crush which most people play on their mobile and not directly to facebook everything seems to be not that big like the cityville or farmville/town or mafia wars era.... i receive an invitation every 15 minutes so facebook will cater less on gaming and exclusively on their mobile and tablet with some tie-in from their facebook account....

btw what do you think is pokemon's download numbers? sales seems a little low from japan because i feel like they are moving to the digital copy now

I guess the bottom line is that all 3 companies made some serious dough. The Nintendo doom really needs to stop because its pretty clear that they still pull some serious weight in the industry. 2014 is going to be a freaking war on VGchartz.

The doom is not for Nintendo as a whole, but for Nintendo home console.

And as as good the 3DS numbers appear to be they are just a shadow if you look at smartphones and tablets sells.

And ps4 and Xbox one are destroying iPhones right?

So, I think the problem is that you're comparing sales of a dedicated handheld game system to sales of ubiquitous devices.  The comparison being drawn only makes sense if you assume that each smartphone and tablet sale is for the purpose of playing games, which of course isn't true.  Whatsoever.  Conversely, no one is buying a 3DS to not play games.  I will grant you there is some overlap, particularly with casual gamers, but the vast majority of them would never buy a dedicated system to begin with.  You have to remember that the DS install base was only 150 million.  That's certainly indicitive of some mass market penetration, but nowhere near the level of the average person who uses a phone and so therefore is going to eventually buy or upgrade to a smartphone.

how can 2ds inflate 3ds numbers, considering it is a 3ds model?

Aligned for Thanksgiving week, 3DS sales are up +494,329 units YoY in the US, November 24th, 2012 vs. November 30th, 2013.

So, Reggie is right: software indeed sells hardware.  2012 was just Paper Mario, which was clearly not a system seller.

3DS Thanksgiving week

2011 US - 495, 944 (driven by 3D Land)

2012 US - 261,997 (lack of decent boost from Sticker Star, and the NSMB2 effect had mostly worn off due to it launching back in August)

2013 US - 756,326 (driven by Pokemon, Link Between Worlds, new entry-point model, and aided by New Lead, Dark Moon, and DKCR 3D)

Why even have this discussion? Both PS4 and X1 were at limited supply so obviously there numbers were not very good as Nintendo. Basically, Nintendo has a great advantage which comparing to other is not really to be saying Nintendo won because of that reason.

Not bashing, just saying that the topic title should have been "How impressive were the 3DS numbers?" Only very few people made a comment only comparing the 3DS to what the DS sold in BF 2006/07 which makes much more sense to do.

Sorry for bad English.

^Nintendo is already doing stuff, it's only a matter of time for the Wii U. I didn't expect Wii U to do well now because it's competing against all the people buying PS4's and Xbox One's. What's important is that the numbers increase compared to when they were at they worse and stay higher; even if the other systems still do better, that doesn't necessarily mean the Wii U is doing bad anymore, it just means the gaming industry is doing better in general, if that makes sense.

To throw some numbers in, if the Wii U now sells 100k worldwide every week on average for the next 3 months, that's a LOT better than before; but even if the PS4 and Xbox One somehow manage 200k a week worldwide (which no offense, I'm shaky about due to supply issues and the fact that launch hype/sales WILL die down), I see that as more of "the Wii U is doing well, but relatively poorly", not "the Wii U is doing bad".

Anyhow, the fact that 3DS isn't a new system and is putting up those numbers is crazy, I hardly believe it. I guess part of it is the miracle of handhelds--that and there were some serious good deals with the 3DS XL and 2DS's. What I mean by the "miracle of handhelds" is just that handhelds are easier to get bigger numbers IMO; the systems are generally cheaper than consoles and families are much more likely to own multiple consoles.

I mean, I alone own 2 3DS's and want to get a 3rd one, and my sister also has one--by contrast, it's usually rather silly and uncommon to have two PS3's in the same house unless there are some special circumstances. I also have a Vita, but I can't ever see my sister getting one because she's not a mid-core or hardcore gamer and most of the titles don't appeal to her.

Anyhow, I'm kind of scared to see how Super Smash Bros. is going to affect this all--I really want the Wii U version to do well (I kinda wish the Wii U one would come out a month earlier to get people to buy Wii U's lol, I'm one of those guys) but in all seriousness I can totally see a lot of college students etc. getting 2DS's or 3DS's to play Smash which might come to like, a $150-160 rig or so, which is not too bad considering how popular Smash is. It's portable which makes it convenient and it's an awesome multiplayer game, if they have good online 3DS Smash might become a highly portable eSport lol (there was talk about it being included in Major League Gaming or something :P).

[/rant]

bolded: don't worry, a famitsu research shows that more people are interested in the wii u version, and that's japan (portableland) we are talking about.

it's basically like mario kart, with every nintendo system having one. some people get one, some get the other, many get both.

iPad won black friday, lets not kid ourselves.

p.s. 3ds is selling well because nintendo fans wanting their mario and zelda fix choose it over the wiiu, quite rightly so too, so when the wiiu dies off over the next few years kindly point the finger at the success of the 3ds rather than third parties and/or xbox/ps fans.

Why are people counting EU and Japan sales? This topic is about NA.

The OP asked about the week sales. No mention of any region. Since they are all sold globally people compare them on a global level.

OP says "Black Friday week".  Black Friday means the day after Thanksgiving, to mark the start of the holiday shopping season.  Thanksgiving being an American holiday.  So, Pavolink is correct to say what he did.  I only counted US sales as well, in my reply to the thread.

Yeah amazon.co.uk had black Friday deals. Last I checked that's not in the US. If you want to see which company "won" a week you have to take into account total sales. This is a pretty pointless conversation anyway.

For the sake of this OP, we are primarily looking at numbers in the US, since it is by far the largest segment of the market at this time of the year, outside of regional launch differences for new hardware.
