The comparison being drawn only makes sense if you assume that each smartphone and tablet sale is for the purpose of playing games, which of course isn't true. Whatsoever. Conversely, no one is buying a 3DS to not play games. I will grant you there is some overlap, particularly with casual gamers, but the vast majority of them would never buy a dedicated system to begin with. You have to remember that the DS install base was only 150 million. That's certainly indicitive of some mass market penetration, but nowhere near the level of the average person who uses a phone and so therefore is going to eventually buy or upgrade to a smartphone.
