Forums - Microsoft - Marvel's MMORPG on 360 dies!

WOW...looks like Microsoft has some else up it's sleeve.  You only need a user base of 1-2 million to achieve alot of success in a MMORPG, so I think they might have something else in the sphere in play, and don't want this game clogging up their space.  Since they own the platform and the network to run the game, they can chart where it needs to go...the plot thickens...

Marvel MMOPRG Is History
The Market Has Changed
February 13, 2008

In an interview on MTV's MMO blog Shane Kim, head of Microsoft Game Studios, confirmed that the Marvel Massively-Multiplayer Online game is officially dead.  Back in September of 2006 the Marvel MMORPG was announced with great fanfare (see "Marvel & Cryptic Unveil Marvel Universe Online") and Frank Pape, Senior Director of Business Development for Microsoft Game Studios, told ICv2 that the Marvel MMO would be out before the end of the decade.

That was then, this is the new reality -- as Microsoft's Kim explained to MTV, the Marvel MMO was conceived as a subscription-based game, and there is currently only one subscription-based MMO (The World of Warcraft) that has had the kind of performance that would "meet our level or definition of commercial success."  Apparently the Marvel project was too invested in the subscription-based format for the developers to attempt to transform the project into an ad-supported or an item/transaction-based game -- and of course the ad-supported and transaction-based formats have so far not yielded the kind of revenue that WoW generates.  According to Microsoft's Kim the decision to end development of the Marvel MMO was decided amicably among all the parties concerned.

Champions Online is likely coming to the 360 and might be a good superhero/supervillain game:

"Luckily, after not-so-much ado, comes word that the unraveling of the Marvel Universe Online project hasn't stopped Cryptic from chugging ahead with a console MMORPG. The same Game Informer cover which bestowed the final titles of Aliens: Colonial Marines and Red Faction: Guerrilla also revealed an all-new project from Cryptic, Champions Online.

Like a combination of Cryptic's two other MMORPGs, City of Heroes and City of Villains, the game will let players be both superheroes and supervillians within the same virtual realm. Though details on the project are thin, Game Informer did confirm that Champions Online is "taking on PCs and consoles." (Emphasis added.)"

It would be HUGE in US, it's a big loss for 360, but it's not something that anyway should cry over.

Tales/IU/TLR should get to 2 or 3 million! post id: 868878

According to pre-order rate in week 13 (post id: 2902544)

Unfortunate but since every MArvel game not made by Capcom has been mediocre to just plain bad, the 360 is probably better off without it.

I want a Heroes MMO!

Playing a MMORPG with a controller is a difficult proposition, as you'd have to dumb down the control screen and options, unless it's a shooter type MMORPG, but something like CoH would not be an easy port.
