Forums - Gaming - I Don't Understand Why People Defend Companies When What They're Doing Is Wrong

I'll defend online passes.

Online servers cost money, someone who didn't give a publisher/dev any money (used buyer) is draining profits when they play online. Is no reason a company should support such a person.

The argument of "Well only one person can play that game online at a time, so is no more a drain than if the original owner played it" holds no weight. It is estimated how long someone will play online and this is factored into profit margins. Lets say the average gamer will play a certain game online for an estimated 50 hours lifetime, everytime a game is sold on that is 100 hours, sold on again it is 150 hours, and so on.

A pubisher wanting a fee for you to play the online and drain resources is not unreasonable.

No it's not, this is the very reason why I, while angrily, accept the pay to play online of the PS4. Their new recording feature and servers need to be paid for.

However for online passes it was wrong. The game has already been bought once before, then sold. The 'resources' that are being drained are with that copy of the game on the store shelf as the original owner is no longer playing it. When a new customer buys it and plays it online, they are not only playing the game but the original users 'right' to play online, that amount of resources that needs to be used.

Online Passes were just another guard against piracy, punishing legitimate gamers, even if that legitmate gamer buys used games.

Hmm, pie.

Reminded me of this:

I agree with you to an extent. The shameless defending of companies is really out of hand. With that said, the difference between buying a car and a console, or even buying a PC and a console is the intended purpose of the device. Any car can get you from A to B, any decent gaming rig can play your PC games. You have options with those products. If what you want to do is play Killzone, you need a PS4. There's no options there. Now, should you keep a defective unit and not do anything about? Fuck no. However, completely cutting out that company isn't really the way to go either because that PS4 is the only platform that can play what you want to play.

This is why PC is the only platform for freedom and justice. It represents freedom to the highest degree.

PC gamers defend broken games because, "Company A will get a patch out soon."

They also defend certain overpriced graphics cards.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

It's sad really. Loyalty is a good thing, but the whole point of the free market is to go with the best option for you dollar.

I was a Playstation guy tried and true from 97-08...my parents always bought Playstation, and when 2007 rolled around (I was 16/17 at the time) I went ahead and got a PS3. Great console, you know good games, free online, blu-ray player...etc.....But two things switched me over to 360 this past gen, it was the console of choice for my friends (I bandwagon jumped in a sense), and better online (biggest factor being party chat, plus more people had mics on 360 than PS3 which made for a better experience)...

But that being said, I see myself going back to PS4 for this new gen. I have more interest in getting a colonoscopy than I do in owning a Kinect device...and since Xone is $100 and the reason for that is the bundling of Kinect...I think I'll take the $100 less expensive PS4...which has all the hype, better price, decent launch lineup, and improved online I'm guessing (since you have to get PS+ it better be good, and finally has party chat)

So yeah, I agree 100% with the OP. It's nice to be loyal but don't defend your company when they make stupid decisions...call them out on it so they can change it for the better.

If your favourite beer maker changes the recipe, you aren't going to support it saying bullshit like "change is good"...you're gonna say fuck it, hand me a different one. The same should go for consoles, etc.

@bolded, Is like you cannot even read.  I already shot down that flawed argument.

As to paying to play online, like PS+ or XBL Gold...you are wrong.  The recording feature of PS4/Xbone is built into the hardware, it doesn't cost anything to keep it running except the electricity to power the system, which you pay for.  When you upload you use your own internet connection which you pay for, it is uploaded and hosted on websites not run by Sony or MS so no reason to pay them.

Game servers should be covered by the cost of the individual games.  What does cost Sony/MS money is the running of the PSN or XBL, but these should all be covered by the sales of retail and digital games/DLC, and the cut of the sale the manufacturer takes.

You don't see Steam charging people to pay online, yet it is no different to PSN/XBL.

Yeah you did and I remember reading that too, just for some reason seemed to ignore it when typing my reply, sorry. I still think it stands though, if someone doesn't enjoy the game enough to keep it, you think they'll play those 50 hrs at all? 8 hrs is more likely, leaving 42 hours for the new owner. I understand the reasoning behind charging for online passes but don't agree with them as they are just punishments for legitmate gamers while the real reason they are exist are because of pirates.

The intergration was not free. You think all the development of the system, the ability to upload to existing social media outlets and Live Streaming cost nothing? All require some kind of input and development. Sadly the industry is no longer a 'buy console and play' industry. There are many things to consider.

It's strange to think that your first post was saying that it costs money to run servers, then you say this should be in the cost of games, yet an online pass isn't in the cost of the game, it's extra (if you buy it) and PSN and Xbox Live are run by servers, yet we don't buy games to pay for this. Although countering my own arguement, we buy the system and guy digital games from the stores, this should pay for the costs of running the servers.

But lets not get this wrong, I understand why they charge but entirely disagree with paying to play games online, I certainly won't be paying any time soon. It's a joke of an idea that has somehow stuck.

i wish nintendo didnt stop pursuing lets Play, often you dont have the urge to buy games when you see the Video. At least thats my opinion, but i personally believe seeing the entire game on YouTube, hurts sales instead of increasing it. Often there is no urge to buy a game when you can see it entirely on YouTube.

Seriously i believe Pikmin 3 sales were so low because lets play showed the entire complete game before it was even out in the west.

Ofc lets play could also increase sales but i believe it is only so when it comes to multiplayer ego shooter and such games.

For Nintendo they are really bad.

The least thing the market needs right now is a divided audience.

Heck... can people just..... enjoy games, no matter what platform it is?

Its ok to have just one console if you´re just able to afford that, but dismiss any other platform just for some fanboy inflated ego?

I think that fanboyism (among other things) will eventually help to kill the console industry

I agree with this post. I love sony, but I'm not going to blindly defend them, are any company for that matter.

Here's a few examples: When Xbox One was announced, people we're defending the absolute embarrassing policies. 24 hour internet check in's and being unable to trade in games normally? How could you defend that? Forcing the Kinect upon consumers? Again, how could you defend that? People who defended Nintendo taking down let's play videos and not allowing Smash at EVO. It's restricting the consumers to do what they want with their products and taking away essentially free advertising. Also, there was Nintendo bringing out the Wii Mini, which is essentially a rip-off and yet people were defending it and saying it was a "bargain." Sony forcing us to pay for online in order to play multiplayer on PS4. Mind you, PS plus is a good deal considering all the free games you get, BUT I shouldn't have to pay in order to get the best possible online experience. Yet people we're defending this. EA incorporating the online pass into titles and putting microtransactions into their games. Not to mention the DRM. People again defended this. I might be a hypocrite because I damage control the Wii U all the time, but somethings you just can't defend. I'm not going to defend Nintendo essentially screwing us over for the first half of 2013 or the fact that they barely marketed their console. Why do people feel the need to defend their favorite company? We should criticize them and help them grow and become better and release better products. We should be bashing Sony and Microsoft for having large failure rates on their consoles. We should bash Nintendo for releasing their console prematurely with little to no killer titles.

I agree with you sir...but how dare you say things that make sense in a videogame board, shame on you.
