The difference between Wii U and Gamecube is Gamecube was PS2/Xbox for kids, while Wii U differentiates itself significantly from the the other consoles.

A drunk Orangutan with Alzheimer's could come up with better marketing and design/scheduling decisions for Wii U than Nintendo did.

As already stated in a linked thread in OP, 20% first day sell-through indicated a low fw, yet people doubted. This is nothing new.
