Forums - Sony - How much would it cost for PS4 to be backwards compatible?

I was just thinking how much would it cost Sony to put a PS3 inside the PS4. by that i mean hardware backwards compatibility.

the PS3 currently costs $200, and will be sold for $150 during its Brack Friday Bunduru. so it doesnt seem like it costs that much to build nowadays.

And with many components being redundant, therefor not needed the costs should be reduced even more. By this i mean, if the PS3 hardware was inside the PS4, it wouldnt need a bluray drive, a hard drive, usb ports, wifi chip, the casing itself, etc. since the PS4 already has those, nor would it need to come with a DS3, since it already has the DS4. you also need not worry about shipping costs, retail cut, etc.

So how much would it cost to have the ps3 architecture (cell, rsx, etc, what ever is needed to run games) inside the PS4 so it can play PS3 games?

would it cost  $75, $100, $125, $150, or more. based off of absolutely nothing, just a guess, it seems like it would cost less than $100

SO if the BOM for PS4 is around $380, i would think the BOM for PS4 with PS3 would be ~$470.

Do you think thats accurate, do you think they could sell it for $500. i would certainly be interested in buying a backwards compatible PS4 for "just" $500, even $550.

You have to take into account that the PS4 motherboard was never built with native BC in mind, so that in itself could drastically affect the size, power output and design of the console. We don;t know how well it'd coincide with the PS4 UI either, to this day, you still can't use the XMB while playing a PS1 game on PS3, lol.

Plus the DualShock 4 (bar L2 and R2, hence Killzone Shadow Fall's new controls) lacks the pressure sensitive buttons the DualShock 3 had, so that's a headache on it's own.

Easily $500, bare minimum, and considering that the 20GB model was neglected at launch with the PS3, it'd likely give journalists the impression that the PS4 is primarily $500. Sony aren't going to risk all of that all over again to appease to an install base half the size of the PS2's.

Doing it with a hybrid technique like with the first PS3s makes more sense than putting a whole PS3 in there.

Basically if Sony planned this from the beginning and put a Cell chip on the board, they'd be able to emulate the other components. Would have been a HUGE pain in the butt though.

Best you can hope for now is Gaikai working great or PS3 classics eventually finding their way onto PSN.

This and the lack of certain capabilities will probably hold me off a couple of years from buying one.

$78.52 That's what I heard.

I think Sony and MS both screwed up big by not making them backwards compatible. The market for the past gen will be more important, because of Achievements/Trophies. The generations before didn't bother people much, because there really was no proof of your game achievements and gaming history, plus the fact that HD remakes were coming out with them. Seems like both companies just wanted to cut 2-3 years off of their life cycles by going straight to slim/budget models, bypassing the launch premium models.

What if you could purchase an add on that would provide B/C? I would buy that instantly. Something in the form of an external USB dongle which was rumoured some time ago if I'm not mistaken.

As far as Sony providing it internally I don't see that happening as they would have to likely change too many parts including the power supply and the cooling solution for the case.

Something external USB would be dope. The PS3 ultra slim mothership and other content are already small and they can become even smaller. It would be possible in the form of a small external hard drive form. I would buy that instantly.
