Forums - Gaming - Eurogamer: What happens when free-to-play games aren't free?

Well it begun with Dead space 3, people must have used the micro transactions so that we're now seeing them everywhere.

I just hope GT6 career mode hasn't been affected by the inclusion of micro transactions. Why bother anyway, you can always play arcade mode if you can't stand the grind. We'll see soon enough. I was never starved for credits in GT5, pretty much maxed out most of the time and buying all the multi million dollar cars not to waste credits.

Don't buy them? I know I won't use any in FM5 or GT6.

Well, well... where were EG when Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3 were released? Or what about World of Warcraft?

I already don't like how Sony followed MS with the paywall but it was expected and I will need to accept but I think it is a bad move from Sony... I prefer a free online approach... now I'm paying I will require a better PSN.

About the microtransactions... I hate this trend... GT6 will use it for easy money and I hate that... at least you can play the full game without microtransactions like in Forza 4... so the bad is not a huge bad.

Now what MS is trying with the launch lineup for Xbone are atrocities... terrible... bad in the bad way... I don't want Sony to follow that... this is a hell of shit... I don't what MS changing the industry for this bullshit terms.

I want my gamer life back

I hear you man, garbage like this is overflowing all over the industry. At least Nintendo and Sony haven't gone down this road that far. Though paid psn is bullshit, and gt6 has me worried.

Ok, would you both reather go back to the era when SNES premium games costed $70-90 per cartridge?

Cliff Blezinsk have called it a long time ago.

I'm not a fan of micro-transactions but they're probably here to stay. Enough gamers will support them for companies to continue down that road.

I think EA really started it with their passes to let you unlock courses in Tiger Woods without playing through the game (or something like that). But it's certainly been coming for a long time. I was just flicking through the PSN on my Vita and noticed that MLB 13 the Show has microtransactions to give your franchise a boost to its budget or to give you road to the show training points and a heal rtts player thing. I have no idea how these are really integrated in the game since I am so awful at the game I don't play it properly...

I thought GT 5 was something of a grind fest already, but I didn't really have much idea what was going on in that game

I don't mind microtransactions in f2p games which is logical, don't particularly like them in normal 60$ games, but IF developers don't alter and gimp the core gameplay at all so it doesn't become a forced grindfest I'm ok with them as another way of income. I won't ever use it, but if some lazy rich guy wants to buy Bugatti Veyron from the start instead of getting it through playing, it's his choice.

The paid DLC not being entirely free is definitely pushing it though :-/

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

It is like those JRPG's where you could level up 5 levels for a small amount of money.

This is the price everyone pays when they just pay the toll and say "I don't care, I know i'm getting a quality service for my money".

Point is case... give them an inch, they will walk a mile. The fact so many didn't see this coming is astonishing. This is nobodies fault but out own.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

You seem to focus a lot on Microsoft even though you dont like them. Just don't buy them and play the game. If you want to then buy them, if not then don't.
