Their taste is somewhat better. You know, those virtual girlfriend games, though... Seriously...they are just SO MUCH FUN

=P

At least when you get sick of her you can turn her off, and most of them are really nice to you. only downsides are a lack of real sanwich making and sex =P

and games like mario on wii look also better as they did the generation before wii. just because wii doesn't have ps3 graphics doesn't mean that games didn't improve graphically. and i think if a game releases with good and bad graphics, japanese would also prefer the better looking version as long as the gameplay is the same.

a cod player will prefer cod on ps4 compared to ps3 but he still buys cod and not battlefield because the cod gameplay is the important factor for the cod fan. and battlefield player play battlefield because of the gameplay and not because it looks better as cod. well, at least most of them.

No no no.

Dragon Quest remained the same for 7 games before Enix said " we should catch up with technology" Japan didnt care

Pokemon remained the same up till X Y - Japan didnt care

Monster Hunter has remained the same... and still is - Japan dont care.

There is also Dynasty Warriors, Ace Attourney, Mega Man ext

Heres what is different. Western gamers expect a graphic leap EVERY game. Japan tends to create 1 engine per generation for a series and will use that the whooole gen with no major changes between games. So yes gen over gen a graphic leap a graphic leap is expected in Japan NOT game over like over here.

P

who says that the majority of western gamers cares about that? do they really need a better looking cod from game to game? or a better looking just dance game? just because developers improve the graphics from game to game in cod doesn't mean that cod players wouldn't buy it without that. but like i said, i also think it is the same for gamers in japan, give a gamer on his wii the same game with good and bad graphics and the version with good graphics will sell better if everything else will be exactly the same. because there is no reason to choose the worse looking version.

that doesn't mean that the game wouldn't sell the same if it would have only the version with bad graphics but we also don't know if that wouldn't be the case with cod. all the cod players i know care only about the things like the structure of the maps, how balanced are the weapons and stuff like that. i never really saw cod players who said that they won't buy the next cod with the same graphics. only people who really complain about that are people who aren't the yearly cod buyers. people who just want to say something bad about this franchise even if they don't play it because they don't like the gameplay and not because they don't like the graphics.

and just to be clear, the topic says gamers in japan value gameplay above graphics and that is suggesting that this isn't the case in western countries. but cod is a prime example why people choose gameplay above graphics. they simply prefer cod above killzone, crysis, battlefield and so on even when all these games have better graphics. sure, ps3 sold more than wii in europe but because of the graphics or simply because people prefer all the games they don't get on wii even without thinking about the graphics?

maybe the majority just prefers games like gta above zelda. do we know how many units wii would have sold if it would have a gta,  gran turismo and so on?

i can only speak about myself and i don't think that i ever bought a game because of the graphics. sure, i like great graphics and i often choose the version which looks best (mostly pc) but i played games like dungeons of dredmor more this year than any awesome looking game and the only reason why i bought games like crysis 2 in the last years was to play with some friends online because we hoped to have fun with the online mode lol. not because the graphics of the armor is so great. and if halo 5 and 6 would look like 4, i would still buy it as halo fan a so that they don't have to change my decision about the game purchase but it will be still cool to have a better looking game.

To everybody talking about gameplay: could you all explain Animal Crossing then?

What's so special about the gameplay in Animal Crossing?

That is the question of the motherfucking century.

I just dont get Animal Crossing

I've only played the GCN original, so I can't speak for all games in the series, but I find the gameplay in Animal Crossing engaging, rewarding, and highly addictive. There aren't many pre-set objectives and challenges in the game, which might be the source of your frustration, but I find that freedom and open-endedness of Animal Crossing to be very satisfying.

That's the exact one i had. It was the last game i bought on my Gamecube. It used to take a lot for me to not like a game back then. The only Nintendo games i didn't like at any time was Metroid and Animal Crossing.

Metroid Prime was actually the 1st game i got on my Gamecube on christmas along with like 3 other games. Boy i loved that fucking game. Metroid Prime was an absolute masterpiece but its funny because i originally didnt like Metroid before Prime came out

I tried my best to figure Animal Crossing out but i just couldn't do it

I just dont understand the appeal for that game

The Japanese community love Animal Crossing but its gameplay is nothing special so the gameplay thing cant be a japanese thing that the OP is talking about

Final Fantasy 13 sucks.

I'm in the tower where you do quests to progress.  Almost at the end, or hopefully I'm almost at the end.  I'll link you my review once I've finished it.

*edit*

I'm giving it another chance and then Final Fantasyy 13-2 because Lightning Returns gameplay looks really good.  Through my second playthrough, I've stated several times that the game is a piece of sh** and I don't take that back at all.  Gets good 20 hours in?  Gran Pulse looks beautiful and really gives off the vibe of a living world, there's actually exploration where you don't have one straight path, but the combat is what has killed the game ever since the start.

the most successful games in western countries are also not famous for their graphics or great resolution. fifa, cod, just dance and so on.

But FIFA and COD improve the graphics every generation to please some gamers

and games like mario on wii look also better as they did the generation before wii. just because wii doesn't have ps3 graphics doesn't mean that games didn't improve graphically. and i think if a game releases with good and bad graphics, japanese would also prefer the better looking version as long as the gameplay is the same.

I know that wii graphics had improved, but the diference between the galaxy and sunshine is not only visual. What is different between fifa 14 and fifa 13?

We reap what we sow

How about a console that can do both? I mean have you tried R&C: a crack in time?

*Warning: Heavy criticizing of Nintendo ahead*

I choose whatever console appeals to me, in my case, the playstation consoles. I have a Wii, but only for xenoblade. I've played mario a thousand times, the zelda series isn't that appealing and everything else was not spectacular.

I don't know where people get the idea that the 360 and the PS3 were just graphics. There is a truly outstanding variety of games on both consoles, displaying their superior graphical prowess and innovative gameplay with the controller. I am completely sure that the casual crowd got the Wii to where it is now, you can quote me all you want, it will not change my PERSONAL perspective on the Wii's success.

With the casual crowd moving on to something else, what we have left with the Wii U is an underwhelming console, struggling to find its place and show off its capabilities against the hyped Sony and MS consoles who are breaking records at this point. Nintendo has plenty of legendary and recognizable franchises in their ranks but with a console that many people don't see as a step up (aside from the already loyal Nintendo crowd), it's going to be hard for Nintendo go gain back that momentum they had on the 7th generation.

The 3DS on the other hand, is a goddamn monster.

Japan? Really? The land of bouncing boobs and hunter games by the score?

I wouldn't say that it's worse but I can't see exactly how it's better. It's just different.

Bouncing boobs adds to the gameplay aspect, you should know this!
