Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One Achievements Don't Unlock While Offline

Last week, while we were reviewing the Xbox One launch line-up, something odd happened. Some achievements popped for one game while we were playing another.

After a short investigation, it turned out that we had earned the achievements in an earlier session, and they were just late to pop. We wrote it off as a quirk of pre-release software and moved on. It never happened again.

Now, however, it seems we may have a better explanation. According to a Microsoft help page, Xbox One achievements don’t unlock while you’re playing offline.

“For achievements and challenges to get unlocked and for rewards to be issued, you must have an active connection to Xbox Live,” explains the post.

“Though you may be able to meet the requirements for an achievement or challenge while offline, you will not receive related notices or rewards until you connect to Xbox Live.”

While we hadn’t manually disconnected our internet connection, it must have dropped offline for a while, meaning that the achievements only popped when the console reconnected.

Presumably a hangover from the console’s previously always-online nature, the set-up may or may not change in the future, but either way if your achievements don’t immediately pop, don’t panic. Your connection may just have temporarily dropped.

Because people cheat offline.

lol what? Not everyone that's offline is a hacker you know. Most hackers ARE offline though.

I thought this was alarming at first. But if I read correctly, achievements that you did playing offline will unlock once you connect it to the internet, so that's not that bad.

Still annoying though.

I know.  But that's also the reason why 360 Achievements don't post the dates unless you're online.  Microsoft doesn't trust anybody.

What if you dont connect for a month. Imagine the spam when you do.

I mean once you connect online they unlock so it's not a big deal and it will probably be patched out sooner or later.

Well you can't your trophies if offline...not a big deal but a liitle bit of an inconvenience hopefully MS and Sony  fix these issues

what about the timestamps?
is the time when you actually got it, or when you connected to XBL and they popped? if the latter, its going to be harder identifying the cheaters

I know some hackers with huge gamescores so this makes sense. those are probably the guys who got free xbox one's.

so this will cut back on rewarding the wrong people.
